. PLEASED WITH TEACHERS’ HIGHER PAT I Raleigh, August. 13.—“I am highly pleased at the action of the State Board of Education and the State School Commis sion in fixing teachers’ salaries at a 20 percent increase ovei last year’s schedule for the full eight months term”, stated Supt. Clyde A. Erwin after the School Commission had con curred in the action of the - State Board of Education of th« week before. “I take peculiar pleasure ir the fact that every road is now left open to provide a 20 per cent increase in Teachers’ sal , aries. I believe we will have sufficient money from some source to operate the school^ and pay the teachers on this 1 basis for the full eight months” | said Mr. Erwin. “In this connection I mighl say that from the beginning 1 stood for a $22,000,000 appro priation providing for a 25 per cent increase in salaries. I ap peared before the joint appro priation committee for this program, and in this request I had the support of the Parent Teacher Associations, the N. C. Education Association, the State Federation of Woman’s Clubs, Junior Order United American Mechanics, civic or ganizations and almost the entire press. Both the chair man of the House Appro priations Committee, Mr. Bryant, and the Senate Com mittee, Mr. Gravely, and other members of the Legislature in public statements emphasized the fact that I never did recede from my request. “When it was found that on ly a 20 percent interest could be made under the estimate of revenue, I still stood out for the $22,000,000 for the schools. On the occasion of the debate in the House on the school appro priation it was stated that I favored a smaller appropria tion. To this Chairman Bry ant replied: “ ‘I have been fur ther quoted as saying that these figures (appropriations for schools) were satisfactory to the better school men of the State, including Mr. Erwin, State Superintendent of Pub lic Instruction. These state ments are untrue, and I have never made them.’ “When the appropriations bill was being considered in the Senate, Senator Gravely said that Superintendent Erwin had ‘appeared before the commit tee in behalf of his request for $22,000,000 for each year of the biennium. Insofar as my know ledge goes, he has never re ceded from that position. The , suggestion which has recently been made that the Superinten dent of Public Instruction has been in any way disloyal to the schools or to the teachers is to my certain knowledge unwar ranted, unfair, unjust and un true’.” CMT CAMP CELEBRATES IN HONOR OF VISITORS Fort Bragg, Aug. 14.—Satur day, August 17, has been set aside as “Visitors’ Day” at the CMT Camp at the army post. Music for the parade will be furnished by the 17th Field Artillery Band. The following candidates were honored during the first week of camp by being appoint ed as battery commanders: L. <3.
