SENATOR SAM ERVIN * SAYS * WASHINGTON. . . .September will find my schedule of speaking engagements almost full. To men tion a few places on the schedule, I will be in Durham, Kinston, Ashe ville, Charlotte, Reidsville, Mount Holly, Clayton and Aberdeen. “THE HILL” ... I am certain that you have heard the word. The Hill”, used when talking about Washington. These buildings are the Capitol, the Senate Office Build ing, and the New and Old House Office Buildings. CAPITOL. . . .The Capitol is built of light - gray sandstone and matching marble. The building is 751 feet 4 inches long, 350 feet wi de, and measures 287 feet 5 1-2 inches in height from the base line on the east front to the top of the Statue of Freedom. One of the in teresting features of the Capitol is the unbroken corridor on the first floor which extends 750 feet. There are other corridors longer in Wash ington — the Department of Agri culture has one that is 88 feet, Commerce, 991 feet, and the Pen tagon, 906 feet. The Capitol covers 3 1-2 acres of ground, contains a floor area of 14 acres, and has 435 rooms. The Capitol and the three buildings previously mention ed which comprise “The Hill” are located in a park of 131 acres. SENATE-HOUSE OFFICES . . . The Senate Office Building is Northeast of the Capitol. It is con nected by an underground tunnel. The subway cars make the trip, operating at top speed, in about 45 seconds, covering the distance of 700 feet. When the bells ring for a roll call vote, Senators'can get to the floor in time to vote, but the scramble at times reminds me of the dash to catch a bus that is ready to depart. Represen tatives have their offices in two buildings, the Old and New House Office Buildings, located Southeast of the Capitol. When called upon to be in the House for a vote, they have an underground tunnel, but are not provided with a subway GOOD GULF GAS & OIL Lubrication Washing & Waxing Tires — Batteries OSBORNE’S GULF SERVICE 117 & 41 — Wallace, N. In January, this placi will again be an ant hill of activit; with the convening of Congress. PRESS CARD. . . .Speaking o Capitol Hill, it now has a news paper, ROLL CALL. Publish© fortnightly, it is a journal of loca news, much like our non-daily N C. newspapers. I was flattered t find in the mail recently a pres card, giving me credentials to re port for the publication. I thin! every other member of Congres got one, too. Anyway, it probabl; is the only newspaper with all Con gressmen accredited reporters. REID What is being considered a “warning” to the labor movement in the United States that “it has an obligation to be truly demo cratic” and that it must “weigh its every act in the light of its effect upon the general welfare” is contained in the “Labor Day Message,” issued by the National - Council of Churches and requested E to be read in all Protestant church • es in September. Adds the Council > in part: 1 “This (obligation, of course is '■ not an obligation of labor alone. 7 Such an obligation lies upon every organization — as upon every in E dividual — in direct proportion to - its power. That obligation is not 1 discharged, for any of us, unless l there is a maximum practical de ■ gree of employment and opportuni > ty for employment and creative ex » pression is equally available to all ' men and women regardless of 1 creed, race, social status, or na 5 tional origin. It is not discharged 7 until justice has been done to every ' child by the provision of good edu cational opportunity and by the elimination of the slum as a breeding place of suffering and delinquency. "Nor can our obligations be limited by the borders of our own country. One of the greatest of all new movements of our century may well be what we call ‘techni cal assistance’ — a sharing by those who have with those who have not of the knowledge and the 1 methods whereby a better and | more abundant life for the peoples of the world can in time be created \ by their own effort and through their own institutions. Where stark need exists — anywhere in the world — our obligation is to share goods also, to share generously and of the meeting. This discussion will be under the direction of Prof. W. F. Babcock of State College’s Civil Engineering Department. Bituminous coal production in Pike County, Ky., rose 71.5 per cent from 1940 to 1953, to 8,218,000 tons, from 3,793,000. A skeleton excavated from a Neo lithic burying ground in Germany showed that tuberculosis of the cninp afflicted man 6.000 vears ago. without thought of return. There are no surpluses, in God’s sight, while there exists a single hungry person anywhere on earth. The National Council of Churches com mends American organized labor for its effective support of inter national programs directed toward these ends. “Our generation lives and does its work under the very shadow of possible universal catastrophe. Man’s rapid development of wea pons of total destruction has not yet been matched by corresponding progress in the development of in stitutions and relationships which can and will control such weapons and spare mankind from death by his own hand.” and Milling Nutrena Concentrate Wallace Feed Mill P&D Feeds Custom Grinding WALLACE, N.
