Morehead City Hoopsters Take Double Header From Jacksonville 'Cardinals' Tuesday Night VI '' Morehead's basketball teams started the New Vcar right, Tues- 0,flay night with a double victory .over Jacksonville, girls winning 34-21 and boys, 4824. They will return the visit on January 25 and ni.we hope to take another double header from them on our home . court. In the girls' game it was i(. rather nip and tuck at the first .for although Morehead stayed ahead in I ho quarter scores of 11- .,, 9. 24 16. 27 20, 34 21. the Jackson ville girls weren't far behind until the last quarter. ,,. None of the girls on cither team ., fouled out although several had three fouls. Elsie Jane Willis, good as usual on her long shots, made 5 field goals and 3 free shots. 1 to total l.'t points Second high was J Patty Jean Hell with 4 field goals I and 1 foul shot, !l points in all. ( The remaining poinls were di j vided between Dcrricksnn and i Windcll wilh 8 and 4 points res- pectively. Carmical, No. 3, chalk- ed up 12 points for Jacksonville, helped out by Kdwards, No. 13, i who scored 7. In Hie boys' game llinigs started off rather slow. Hie first quarter ending 9 8, for Morehcad's "Kagles," lint the margin increas ed some in the next quarter and the half score was 17 10 The last half speeded up quite a bit and the fouls began to add up Buck Matthews made 4 fouls, Leslie Kca gle 3. In this last half the scores were 34 lti, 48-24. for the "Kagles" of course The forward for the "Katies" who shone in this game was Leslie Keagle who bagged 13 field goals and 4 foul shots, mak ing a total of 30 points. Over half of these points were made in the l;st half when the boys really wanned up and played a good game. The remaining III points were made by Buck Matthews with 7, Mickey Wnobid 4, Hay Lewis 3, Tommy Cordova 2. "Struggle" Steed 2. The "Cardinals" star seemed to be Likens, No. 8, who scored 7 field goals and 1 free shot, to total IT). Second high was tied between Godwin, No. 3 and Chadwick. No. 4, with 3 each. The next game on the schedule is Camp Lejeune, here, Friday night, at 7:30. This is a came which everyone has been looking forward to. When Morehcad's "Kagles" played the Camp Lejeune "Marines" at Camp Lejeune our boys were defeated 40-30. The girls' team also won from Oriental, in a one-sided set-to, 50 15. Jasper tied them up however, 28-28. The boys' tilt with Oriental was tight and exciting from start to finish. Newport's center, Jerry Diffee was high scorer for the win ners with 15 points. He was also top man in the Jasper contest, tal lying 21 markers. Koontz made 11 points and I'hillips 7 in the Orien tal contest. At the half the score was 22 9. The last quarter was a contest in foul shots, foul shots winning the game. Newport made 15 out of 18 while Oriental made onlv 0 out of 26. Lupton, center for Oriental, was high scorer for his team. Gilgo. guard, followrtl with 12. In the Jasper game Newport's scorers were Culbreth 7, Butncr i, Sermons 3, Robertson 3, and Gray 1. For the losers French was high scorer with 8 points. Dix on was second with 6. Jasper plans a return game at Newport some time next month. High scorers for the girls against Oriental were Peggy Mann, 23 points, and Shirley Garner 15.
