Burmese Communists Steal Buried Treasure Chests RANGOON (AP) Burmese Communists, occupying the sleepy village of Payabyo, 20 miles east of the rail junction of Pegu, hit what proved to be more than "pay dirt." The Reds faced the threat of a government attack. They decided to "dig in." Accident rather than design guided their picks to a spot where six years previously Pegu's wealth iest citizen, U .Sein Win, buried his riches when the Japanese overrun Burma. The Communists uncovered two large chests. They pried one open and found It xamraed with cur rency and jewelry. Government troops arriving at Payaabyo found no sign of tbe Communists. But Sein Win, who accompanied them to investigate the safety of this hidden treasure, found .plenty of evidence of their recent (a-esence. The larger of the two chests, containing Sold, jewelry and currency worth more than 130,000 pounds sterling, had disappeared. The Communists had decided that aKh was perfer able to prestige. For Sein Win these was some consolation. Tbe -smaller chest was untouched. It contained approxi mately 40,000 pounds sterling. Sein Win, learning the hard way, has removed Us contents to place .of greater safety-tf local bank. octal jNefus Editor Phone B44I1 New look in N. C. Education Is Theme Of P.T.A.
