Jenkins, Rotar ians, spoke on the topic, "It Mat ters What a Man Believes" at the weekly meeting of the Beau fort Rotary club Tuesday night in the Inlet inn. The Rev. W. Y. Stewart presided in the absence of the president, B. J. May, who was attending a Production Mar keting administration meeting at Winston-'Salem. Mr. Jenkins told his fellow Ro tarians that a solution of man's problems will constitute a solu tion to world problems. He point ed out that one's conception of God and man determines wiiat a person does. As an example, he cited the be lief of the ancient Jews in Jah weh, their god who loved only Israel, and constantly admonished his followers to make war on their enemies; he also cited Allah, god of the Moslems, who sanctioned the killing of anyone who was not a Moslem. Mr. Jenkins explained that per sons who worship material things such as wealth, do not find the cenjentment and happiness hu man beings dream of. The speaker declared that man must believe in God, the source of life, and he must believe in him self. Two Forest Fires Destroy Timber Properly Two forest fires and a marsh fire occured in the county during the past two weeks. Businessman Representatives of North Caro lina in Congress, and otners, have been requested by the Morehead Citv Chamber of Commerce to support legislation exempting a ceitain portion of the capital gains of small businesses from income tax. Letters on this matter have been sent to Sen. Clyde R. Hoey, Robert L. Iioughton, chairman of the House ways and meitns com j mittce, Walter F. George, chair I man of the Senate finance com-j mitlee, ad Colin F. Ste'. cnief: of ;-taff, joint committee on in-; tumil revenue taxation. The letter from the Chamber of Comeice read in part, "Our firm.1 conviction is that American small business is the key to the success' ! ful opeiHiion oi our cHpuansuc of our i systt'nl We believe that the American small businessman pro vides the means to subsidize agri culture, to subsidize foreign acti vilies, and, of course, to provide our own internal revenue. For these reasons we believe it to be a very dangerous course to pursue to make it impossible and impruc !ic!i for the small businessman to operate at a profit and expand his operations by plowing these pro fits back into his business without severe hardship. ". . . Our recommendation . . . is to enact legislation to exempt taxes on capital gains for the first $10,000 to $15,000. We feel that such a subsidy for the expansion of small business, which will ere ate more PyrH and bring more taxes indirectly, is equally as justifiable as paying a farmer for not planting a money crop and paying him for improving his cap itai investment by means of sow ing pastures for increasing the productivity of his soil. Certainly it is as justifiable to protect our own business structure as it is to protect business and industry in Western Europe and Japan . . ." In a reply to the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Dougton has promised to bring the matter to the attention of the Hodse Ways and Means committee. Mercury Drops Below Freezing Temperatures here dropped to 27 degrees Monday and Tuesday and many crops throughout the county were nipped by the cold snap. Frank Parker, federal-state cron statistician, said however. tnpt the cold snap may have been blessine because it retarded the unseasonal . blossoming of fruit trees and growth of small grain crops. "1 think the greatest danger to the crops from the weather still iies ahead, and anything that will retard development of crops should be a blessing," Parker said. A field inspection, he added, re vealed that peach trees generally were "showing pink" but were not in full- bloom, and this may nave helped the peaches to with stand the told. Small grains, he added, were i e "largest I've ever seen" at tins time oi year and were in a "dangerous stage." However, if the tops were damaged by the cold, it still mignt be possible for 1 them to sprout out again. Mel ville Broughton, United States, se nator, that it opposes the proposed federal legislation to n.ise the mi nimum wage, which stands now at 40 cents an hour. The Chamber of Commerce ob jects on the basis that the Fair Labor Standards act, now being considered in Congress, insofar as it deals with the minimum wage, is merely an inflationary measure. Mr. Broughton's letter, in reply to the Chamber's opinion on the matter, is as follows: ". . . It is apparent that the bill will be acted on in the House of Representatives first. When this is done, it will come to the Senate and you will then know better what the provisions are. For your in formation, the House Education and Labor committee will gq into executive session on March 1 in connection with HR 2033, which is the principal pending bill on amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act. "Of course, the consensus here and elsewhere is that the minimum wage will be and, in fact, should be increased. The dispute is on the question of how far it should go. 1 have heard some intimations that it will probably stop at about oO cents an hour, although this is not final or authoritative. "I have urged the Senate Com mittee on Labor and Public Wel fare to ctfnduct adequate hearings before reaching any decision as to amending this act.
