Mrs. Lillian Hendrix returned
home over the weekend from Kings
Mountain where she was called
three weeks ago by the death of
her mother.
Miss Betty Lou Merrill returned
to Woman's college in Greensboro
Sunday after spending the week
end at home.
Mr. and Mrs. T. H. McQuaid at
tended the Southern Conference
basketball tournament in Raleigh
last weekend. While in Raleigh
they were the gupsts of Mr. and
Mrs. Howard Lee.
Mr. and Mrs. J, C. O'Neil of
Portland, Me., were the guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Simmons last
weekend. Mr. O'Neil, before his
retirement, had been with the
Hartford, Conn., city school where
he was principal and teacher of
foreign languages.
Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Merrill will
return to their apartment at 122
Craven St., Sunday after a week's
visit in New York.
Dr. and Mrs. R. A. Luongo left
Tuesday for Philadelphia after a
short visit here. While here they
stayed with Mrs. Monroe Gillikin.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry White of
Winston-Salem spent Tuesday at
their apartment at 1105 Front st.
Mr. and Mrs. Julius Adair re
turned home last night from a trip
to Akron, O.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Smith were
called to Raleigh last Saturday by
the illness of Mrs. Smith's mother,
Mrs. John Dozier. They returned
home Sunday bringing their daugh
ter, Becky, who had been visiting
her grandmother, home with them.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bateman and
daughter, Sara Jo, have moved
from their apartment on Craven
st. to their home at Core Creek.
Mr. Julian Hamilton left Tues
day for the Veterans hospital in
Richmond where he will receive
treatment.
Mrs. John Dill returned home
last Wednesday from Greensboro
where she had been called by the
serious illness of her son-in-law,
Mr. Robert Lucas.
Mrs. Milton Lipman and her son.
Daniel, returned to Beaufort last
Thursday after a visit in Baltimore.
Miss Jocelyn Stevens returned
home Sunday from a ten-day visit
with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Britting
ham in Atlanta, Ga.
Leroy Gillikin of Otway. Bobby
Austin and Tom Hamilton, both of
Beaufort, who have been stationed
at Camp Pickett, Va? have been
moved to Camp Stoneman, Cal.

Mrs. Fred Gill and son, Arthur,
of Petersburg, Va., arrived Monday
for a visit with her mother, Mrs.
Arthur Bradsher. They all left
Wednesday for Philadelphia for a
two weeks' visit with Mrs. Brad
sher's son, Dr. Arthur Bradsher, jr.
Mr. and Mrs. Willie Loftin, and
Sgt. and Mrs. Bill Brister and
daughter, Miriam Carol, left Tues
day for a two-week visit in New
Orleans, La., and Pascagoula, Miss.
Mrs. Robert Smith and infant
daughter returned home Sunday
from Morehead City hospital.

left Wednesday for Durham after
a stay with Mrs. Carrie Davis.

Friendship Club Has
Second Birthday Parly
The Friendship club celebrated
its second birthday Tuesday eve
ning when it met at the home of
Mrs. George Willis. Hostesses for
the evening were Miss Elizabeth
Simpson, Mrs. William Skarren and
Mrs. George Bridges.
Two new members, Mrs. Julia
Basden and Mrs. Berna Johnson
were welcomed into the club.
Following the business session,
bingo was played, with cover-all
prize going to Miss Doris Wheal
ton and the door prize to Mrs!
Price Johnson.
The hostesses served cookies
with two lighted candles in each
cookie to celebrate the anniver
sary, soft drinks, nuts and Easter
eggs for refreshments, and pre
sented each club member with an
Easter rabbit favor.
The next meeting will be held
at the home of Mrs. Clem Willis,
with Miss Patsy Willis and Mrs.
Talbert Dunn acting as co-hostess

by the president. Mrs. Gene Smith,
to meet with the regional director
of Boy Scouts, and to choose a den
mother for the pack.

Adair, president; Mrs. Billy Ar
rington, vice-president; Mrs. Eddie
Paull, recording secretary; Mrs.
Jack Barnes, corresponding secre

Honored on 80th Birthday
Mrs. Sidney Hill Whitehurst of
Straits celebrated her 80th birth
day Thursday. Feb. 22, with a din
ner given in her honor by her four
sons and four daughters, all of
whom were present for the occa
sion. a
Immediately following the din
ner an informal open house was
held at the home of Mrs. Henry
Chadwick of Gloucester, daughter
of Mrs. Whitehurst.
Spring flowers were used
throughout the home and the guest
of honor was presented with a cor
sage of pink carnations.
The dining room was centered
with an arrangement of daffodils
and fern. The three-tiered birth
day cake and the punch bowl were
placed at one end of the table and
refreshments were served to the
guests by Miss Hilma Chadwick
and Miss Glenda Willis, grand
daughters of Mrs. Whitehurst.
