The gym was in a bedlam as time

crazy. C. Willis responded with a

Visit in Raleigh
By Alice K. Kondthaler
Members of the 9th grade civics
class of Ocracoke high school en
joyed a trip to Raleigh during ear
ly March and were delightfully en
tertained by Beaufort citizens dur
ing their Sunday morning sojourn
in Beaufort. Through the courtes
ies of F. R. Bell and Dan Walker,
the group were taken to visit his
toric Fort Macon, and were given
the opportunity to ride along At
lantic Beach, and to visit the local
radio station.
This Beaufort sightseeing trip
climaxed a very happy three-day
visit to Raleigh, where the group
visited the Senate and met Sena
tor Campen, and the House of Rep
resentatives. Representative Rus
sell Swindell of Hyde county intro
duced the students to Governor
Scott and took the group to the
offices of the secretary of state
and the treasurer. A trip to the i
Hall of History and to the museum
was enjoyed; also a visit to the
State School for the Blind with
Ronald Stowe of Hatteras, relative
of Alona Farrow, showing the
group around.
On Friday night tickets were ob
tained at State College coliseum
tor the basketball tournament; on
Saturday the group visited the
University of North Carolina at
C hape! Hill. Arriving in Beaufort
on the late Saturday night bus. the
moup was delighted with the cour
tesies shown them there before
they left for Atlantic and the Sun
j day mailboat back to Ocracoke.
Needless to say all parents were
waiting at the dock to welcome
them home.

give Beaufort a 15 10 first period
advantage.
Newport, however, stayed right
behind, using the foul line to gai
ner their first five tallies. MeCabe
lofted three in a row and added
a lay up, while watchckarm guard
Billy Widgeon connected with a set
and a foul to pull Newport within
five points at the end of the first
quarter, 15-10.
McCabe hit for four more one
pointers and looped in a set to
continue the Newport surge in the
second period, while the Sea Dogs
were able to make but one point
by Woodard. The half ended with
Newport on the long end of a 18
16 score.
Continuing their driving game,
Newport sewed up the contest by
stepping out to a 27-22 third quar
ter lead as McCabe time after time
slipped through the foul-ladened
Sea Dogs for layups.
Yet the dogged Green and White
were not to be denied. Sparked
by big Owens' 7 and Lynch's 4 tal
lies, Beaufort crept up steadily
until Newport was forced to em
ploy freezing tactics with but min
utes to go. Here three more gratis
throws by McCabe provided the
thin margin of victory as Lynch
went to work.

Contract 4 H played by South ]
Once in a while, sacrifice bid !
ding backfires. In a recent tour- 1
nament. several of the E - W pairs
became ambitious to reach slam i
and were defeated at a contract of !
5 spades. Our South player had |
been holding uninteresting hands 1
and decided to do some bidding,
?'come w hat may.' Over East's I
opening bid of 1 Club, South rail
ed 1 Spade and. on the second
round, bid 2 Hearts. West was
deterred from bidding Spades be

rightfully pushed South to a 4 11 1
contract which was doubled by I
East.
At this point, spread the N - S j
hands and plan the play with the |
Spade king as the opening lead, j
followed by the Diamond queen.
Let someone play the defense and
test your skill.
Here's how the play actually
proceeded, ? the queen of Dia
monri* was taken by dummy's
king, followed by the Heart jack
which won the trick when East
and South played low. South now
icalized that in order to hold his
loss to a minimum, he would have
to employ the 'dummy reversal'
procedure. The key play was a
low Club from dummy which Fast
took with the jack. East returned
a Diamond which South captured
with the ace.
South led the 10 of Clubs ami
East returned a Spade after win
ning with the king of Clubs. South
trumped in dummy and led the
ijuecn of Clubs, -East covered
with the ace. South trumped and
entered dummy by trumping a Dia
mond.
On North's 9 of Clubs, South
discarded a Spade and continued !
