The health officer expressed the opinion that no health department could serve the public successfully without the good will and coopera tion of the medical profession, and that, in his experience, the private practitioner has been ever ready to support any reasonable public health program. He added that "socialized medi cine" would lower the standard of medical practice, and therefore, is not in the interest of the public. Dr. S W Hatcher briefly dis cussed the significance of certain types of blood in the case of preg nancy. Dr. B. F. Royal, home defense representative of this area, made an interesting report on the State Defense meeting in Greensboro last week. A request from the Professional and Business Women's club came before the society at the last meet ing that a cancer clinic be set up at the Morehead City hospital. Dr. M. B. Morey, secretary of the soci ety, read the letter from the State Board of Health staling that as soon as the State was able to secure a medical director for the State can cer program, the director would come to Carteret county to discuss the proposed cancer clinic. Dr. C. S. Maxwell, president of the medical society, stated that the society was requested to nominate a member to compete first on a state-wide basis, then on a Nat ional basis for the title of "Doc tor of the Year." Tillery, Sr., who en tered eternal rest three years ago yesterday, March 15, 1948. At rest is the one we loved so dear, Silent is the voice we loved to hear; Too far away for sight or speech, But not too far for our thoughts to reach. You are always in our minds And somehow always near. But words cannot ever tell How much we miss you, dear. Mrs. Elaine B. Tillery ml6 and Herbert, Jr. Health Nurse Speaks to PTA Mrs. Leota Hammer, public health nurse, told of the public health program as it is carried on in the county schools Tuesday eve ning when she addressed the Beau fort PTA at the monthly meeting. She said that up until a year ago no action had J?een taken aft er physical defects were found in children, but that when the state legislature appropriated $550,000 last year, the health department was able to have 146 tonsil and adenoid operations performed on Carteret county school children, 93 pairs of glasses were provided needy children, two hernia opera tions were performed. Several eye operations were performed through the cooperation of the State Aid for the Blind, and three children were sent to the school for the blind. In addition to aid to the school children, the health department also placed first aid kits in the county schools and provided scales for the larger schools. Mrs. Hammer said that the pre school clinic is held each spring to determine and correct physical de fects in children before they en ter school. Immunization and booster shots are also given at that time. She remarked that it was hoped that the state legislature would be able to increase the appropriation for correction of defects in school children where their families could not pay for. them. This program will mean fewer repeaters in class rooms, when children can see the blackboards and can hear clearly, she explained. Prior to Mrs. Hammer's talk, Miss Susan Rumley's third grade children gave a play titled Billy Seeks Adventure. The meeting was opened with the Lord's prayer. Following the program, Miss Maud Green, secrc taiy pro tern, read the minutes. E. W. Downum, treasurer, report ed $9H4.71 in the bank as of March 1. He told the PTA that subversive activities should be reported by letter, or phone 34126, to the Charlotte FBI office.
