Courtroom Drama Features Stars Spencer Tracy, Pat O'Brien, Di ana Lynn and John Hodiak are the ?tcllar headliners of M-G-M's pow erful courtroom drama, "The Peo ple Against O'Hara," which plays Thursday and Friday at the Beau fort theatre. In the new picture Tracy returns to the field of straight drama, fol lowing his comedy hits in "Adam's Rib," "Father of the Bride" and "Father's Little Dividend." "Adam's Rib" and "Father of the Bride" gave him twin , honors in a na tional readers' poll, with the latter film also winning him an Academy nomination. His current role is that of a man who returns to criminal law, against the advice of his daughter, because of his fervent belief in the innocence of a boy accused of murder. The ingenious scheme and fearless courage by which he tracks down and corners the real crim inal makes for a drama packed with suspense and emotional ten sion. The picture marks the introduc tion of Tracy and Pat O'Brien as a motion picture team. Close friends since the years when they battled for a foothold on Broadway, they also enact friends in "The People Against O'Hara," in which O'Brien is seen as a police officer. It is illegal for adver tisers to post signs on rights-of-way of North Carolina highways, ac cording to an opinion given by At torney General Harry McMullan to the State Highway and Public Works commission. McMullan's ruling came at the request of the commission, which has designated the month of No vember for a campaign of volun tary cooperation from roadside ad vertisers, looking to removal of all advertising from rights-of-way. The commission has indicated it will take more stringent action if the sign owners fail to cooperate. "This does not mean there can be no signs at all," Highway Chair man Henry W. Jordan emphasized. *It merely means that roadside ad vertisers should take their signs off the rights-of-way and put no more on the rights-of-way.' He pointed out that signs ad vising the exact footage of right of-way for given roads are posted at frequent intervals along the highways, and these should be con sulted by advertisers who want to know whether their signs encroach an rights-of-way. McMullan said the commission is empowered to remove signs from rights-of-way, even over the objec tions of owners of the signs. He added that the law makes it a mis demeanor for advertisers to put signs on rights-of-way. Highway maintenance forces throughout the state have been di rected to tear down signs posted on rights-of-way to advertise fairs, auto races, games, auctions and other events that already have been held. This, according to highway officials, will reduce some of the eye-distraction that creates traffic hazards, make the roadsides look better, and at the same time create compliance with the state and fed eral regulations forbidding en croachment on rights-of-way. After this month, such signs will oe taken down by highway forces whether the advertised event has been held or not, and the same po icy will be applied to other illegal roadside advertising. Already the petroleum industry, through its marketing managers in North Carolina, is cooperating in the voluntary sign-removal pro gram. The marketing managers are requesting service stations to cooperate. Chairman Jordan will meet soon with bottlers and other merchandising groups to obtain their cooperation. _ The campaign to remove signs From rights-of-way has safety and roadside improvement as two ob jectives, but it also is necessary EAST DRIVE-IN THEATRE One-Half Mile East of Beaufort On Highway 7> TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY Also Selected Short Subjects Children Under 12 Admitted Free LAST TIMES TONIGHT "Bitter Rice" SYLVA MANGANO FRIDAY and SATURDAY "Last Outpost" RONALD REAGAN RHONDA FLEMING WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY 101) NEVER SAW THE SCREED SHINING SO IRIEHT POWELL STEVENS - DRAKE ADOLPHE MENIOU ?
