Home Society Christmas Fuud
Drive Brings $14,000 to Date
To date only $14,000 has been
raised in the annual Christmas
Fund campaign of the Children's
Home Society of North Carolina,
Inc., toward a goal of $40,000.00
for the care and placing of home
less babies, it was announced to
day by Miss Harriet Tynes, execu
tive director.
This is the 48th Christmas that

in giving them a good start in life.
The results of the drive so far
are even more upsetting, Miss
Tynes said, because at the same
time last year $17,600.00 had been
raised.
The Christmas appeal is the ma
jor fund-raising campaign of the
society. The State Junior Woman's
clubs conduct a campaign in Sep
tember to raise the remaining one
tenth necessary for the $90,000
yearly budget. However, persons
who are contacted in September
are not re-solicited in December
unless they wish to contribute
again.

country will share more than $2,
000,000 in pre-holiday compensa
tion this year, it was announced
today by Ralph W. Burger, presi
dent of the food chain.
Every employee with as much as
six months' service will receive a
part of the annual fund voted by
the company's board of directors.

care babies from throughout the
state and placing them in the nur
sery in Greensboro until adoptive
parents can be found for them.
There are usually 18 babies liv
ing at the nursery and cared for
day and night by one full-time
trained nurse, one half-time train
ed nurse, two practical nurses and
two aides.
In addition to the babies cared
for in the nursery and placed in
adoptive homes, the Soceity also
does counseling work with the par
ents. One-tenth of the babies do not
go to adoptive homes. The parents
are given counseling service and
work with the Society's competent
staff to make other arrangements.
The Society also keeps compre
hensive records on the babies and
their backgrounds and carefully
match babies and adoptive parents
to assure the best possible home
life for both.
All these activities take money
and only citizens of North Caro
lina can supply this money. Fol
low-up letters were sent out this
week to remind North Carolinians
that more than 318 babies are look
ing to them for their health and
happiness in 1952, Miss Tynes said.

Unusual Bite
Montreal ? (AP) ? Mrs. Ernest
Heber was treated for an unusual
bite on the farm. The provincial
laboratory identified the attacker
as a non-venomous scorpion com
monly found in Central America,
probably reaching Mrs. Hebert's
home in a bag of imported fruits
or vegetables.
