Buck Matthews, USMC, Camp I,ejeune, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Matthews. Miss Verona Eubanks was ad mitted to the hospital Saturday for an emergency operation. Mrs. P. S. Chagaris of New Bern visited her daughter, Mrs. Gus Davis and family, over the week end. Miss Ann Mills returned from New York City Thursday to spend the summer with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Mills. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Poyner of Moyock spent the weekend with her parents at Crab Point, Mr. and Mrs. I). S. Oglesby. Mrs. A. J. Walker and son, Dan ny, of Plain City, Ohio, arrived Friday to spend a month with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Ogles by. Guests of Mrs. J. W. Jackson over the weekend were Edward Brown, Lt. Carl Phiffer, the Rev. Phiffer and Lester Hook of Wash ington, D. C. They were accompan ied by A. B. Roberts on a fishing trip Saturday. George Roberts Wallace returned Saturday from a two weeks' busi ness trip in Louisiana. W. L. Derrickson, A. H. James and Marshall Ayscue attended the Democratic convention in Raleigh Thursday. Major Margaret Rich, USA, of Washington, D. C., spent several days recently with her sister, Mrs. B. H. Kargle and family. Mr. and Mrs. Smith of Mer ry Hill spent Thursday night with their daughter, Mrs. E. B. Thomp son and family. Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Eargle were in Dillon, S. C., visiting relatives last week. Mrs. Elmer Nichols entered the hospital yesterday morning for an operation. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Norris spent Sunday afternoon in Williamston as guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzhugh Fussell. J. C. Harvell spent Sunday in Goldsboro with his mother who is a patient ^n the hospital there. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Guthrie and son, Robert, left Sunday to return to Pensacola, Fla., where he is stationed. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Joyner of Farmville spent the weekend here j as guests of Mr. and Mrs. John , Lash ley. Mrs. Howard Strawcutter left Saturday for Pasadena, Calif., to spend a few weeks with her hus-i band who ia stationed at Camp Pendleton. He will leave soon for overseas duty. GREAT OAK Mrs. Eddie Cameron and Mrs. Eric Johnson of Durham are at Mrs. Cameron's cottage to spend a few days. Mrs. W. B. Quinerly of Ayden is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Paul Webb. Mrs. Raymond Pollock of New Bern is spending some time at her cottage here. Her daughter. Mrs. Emily Crawford, spent the week end with her. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Black and Mr. Harold Wood left Monday 10 return to Birmingham, Ala., after spending a lew days with Mrs. MaK tin's sister and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Goodwin. Mrs. J. Dewey Willis spent iwo days last week in Norfolk visiting her son and family, Jerry Willis. Dr. and Mrs. Herbert Bolden of South Bend, Ind., left Sunday after spending a few days with her brother and family, Mr. J. B. Maey. Charles Macy and Donald Davis, students at Carolina, will arrive to morrow to spend the summer with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Macy and Mr. and Mrs. Abram Davis. Mrs. Everett Willis of Williston is visiting Mrs. Elmer Nichols. Mrs. Lawrence Chytka is leaving Thursday to make her home in Memphis, Tenn., with her husband who is stationed there with the Marine Corps. Mrs. Chytka, the former Miss Jessee Guthrie, will graduate from the Morehead City high school tomorrow night. Cpl. Paul Willis, USAF. station ed in Macon. Ga.. will arrive home tonight. He will be married June 1 to Miss Mary Jane Roberts. Girl Scouts Camp Saturday Night at Legion Hut Thirty members of Morehead City Girl Scout troop No. 1 and seven ehaperones went on an over night camping trip to ihc Ameri can Legion hut Saturday. The troop is composed of four patrols and the leaders are Mrs. Truman Kemp. Mrs. Norman Post, Mrs. Robert Poulk and Mrs. Austin Wil liams. Saturday afterrtoon they all ehi joyed swimming an^ cooked hot dogs over an open fire at supper. Games were played afterwards andf Mrs. Billie Woods furnished music on an accordion. Breakfast Sunday morning was followed by Sunday school. Robert Poulk read the lesson and Mrs. Williams, a story. Camp broke up j at noon. Chaperones were Mrs. ' Kemp, Mr. and Mrs. Poulk, Mr. and Mrs. Post, and Dr. and Mrs. Wil liams. Wives of Elks Visil Morehead, Marine Base The annual convention of the North Carolina Elks club was held in New Bern Friday and Saturday. Following the memorial service Friday morning (or the Elk* who had passed away during the year, the women at the convention left for Moreheajl City and had a sea food lunch at the Sanitary res taurant. They stopped by the Marine Air base at Cherry Point in the after noon for a tour of the base. Forty Elks' wives were at the luncheon. Bride-to-Be Entertains Miss Barbara Willis, June bride elect, entertained at an informal party on her lawn Saturday morn ing for Miss Ona Willis, who will also be a June bride. Miss Mary Jane Roberts is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve G. Roberts of Morehead City, who announce her engagament to Cpl. Cleveland Paul Willis. Jr., USAF, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis, also of Morehead City. The' wedding will take place June 1 in the First Bap tist church.. Mrs. Clyde Carr Entertains For Miss Mary Sue Tenney Mrs. Clyde Carr was hostess Fri day night at a shower for Miss Mary Sue Tenney, wha will be married June 8 to Thomas Noe. Guests from out-of-town were Mrs. Ralph D. King, mother of Mr. Noe, Mrs. Floyd Rains and Mrs. John Jef fryes, his sisters. All were from Kinston. Decorations were in the wedding motif and in the center of the mantel was a white lace heart with the names Sue and Tom written in silver. On either end of the mantel were green tapers entwined with ivy. The bridge and canasta tables were centered with white tapers in silver candleholders and roses were used throughout the house. Miss Tenney was presented with a white corsage, her mother, Mrs. Edwin Tenney, was given a pink one and Mrs. King was given yel low carnations. The honoree was preseiiied many gifts of china and silver in- her chosen pattern and received silver from the hostess. Mrs. Rilla Hughes Norwood was high score bridge winner and re ceived summer earrings and a necklace. Low bridge was won by Mrs. Rachel Willis who was given earrings. A vase was won by Mrs. Charles B. Noe for high canasta and Mrs. Ed McLohon received a clothes brush for low canasta . Mrs. Carr served block cakes topped with the bridal pair's names, *We4diftg moulds of ice cream, nuts and mints, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Roberts Entertain Couples' Club Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Roberts were hosts to the Thursday night couples club and special guests wert Mr. and Mrs. N. F. Eure of Beaufort. R. W. Taylor wa shigh scorer, Mrs! J. W. Jackson second and Mrs. W. L. Derrickson lo wwhen scores were compiled at the end of bridge play. Mrs. Roberts served cream puffs and coffee. Plans were made to have the club met at the home of Mrs. R. W. Taylor this Thursday night. WSCS Leaders Take Office Sunday at Worship Service Officers of the WSCS of the First Methodist church were installed Sunday morning at the worship service. Mrs. Darden Eure is the new president. Other officers are Mrs. S. A. Chalk, jr., vice-presi dent, Mrs. Kenneth Wagner, secre tary; Mrs. R. E. Harrell, cor responding secretary; Mrs. J. C. Taylor, treasurer. The supper consisted of chick tn salad, baked ham, pimento cheese sand wiches, relUhes. ice cream, cookies and coffee. A social hour follow ed the supper. Wednesday night Mrs. Waldron Bailey, 111 and Mrs. Allen Leary, Jr . honored Miss Willis at their bridge club with a crystal shower. Guests were Miss Shirley Farrior, Mrs. S. A. Horton, Mrs. Bruce Wil lis and Mrs. A. B. Vick. Mrs. Jesse Lewis won high score prize, a teapot. Second high was won by Mrs. Horton iVho received a bracelet. Pastel flower arrangements of snap dragons, larkspur, lilies, and gladiolas brightened the room. The individual tables were dec orated with white tapers in silver holders, pastel bows and sweetpeas. The honoree received a coraage of red roses. On arrival guests were served ice cream punch, bri dal cakes, nuts aid mints. High bridge winner was Mrs. Bruce Wil lis; second high. Miss Joyce Vick; floating prize winner, Mrs. Kenneth Wagner; canasta, Mrs. Carl Bell. The hostesses presented the bride-elect with a china teapot in her pattern. Wesleyan Guild Members Attend Dinner Meeting The Wesleyan Guild held its May dinner meeting in the Sunday school rooms of the Franklin Memorial Methodist church last Monday night. The excellent din ner was served by the ladies of the church. Mrs. Theodore Economon, president of the Guild, welcomed the Rev. and Mrs. Leon Couch of the First Methodist church and Mrs. G. Henry Jackson, president of the WSCS, who were special guests. The invocation was given by Mr. Couch and the Guild ritual used. After dinner the program chair man, Mrs. A. B. Roberts, assisted by Mrs. Fred Willis, presented a program of games. One, a bubble gum contest, was won by Mrs. Nell Perry. The members took part in teams. The winner of the scram bled word contest was Miss Ruth Willis, captain of her team. Mrs. Madie Bell modeled a hat dec orated by her team and won the hat-decorating and display contest. Mr. Couch was the iudge. Mrs. Samuel Coffey Hostess At Bridge Party Wednesday Mrs. Howard Rivers and Mrs. Willis Tapley were special guests Wednesday ngiht when Mrs. Sam uel Coffey entertained her bridge club. High score honor was won by Mrs. Truman Kemp and Mrs. Cof ey was second high. The hostess served soft drinks during play and banana cream pie and coffee at the end of progres sions. Tomorrow the cftib will meet at the Aome of Mrs. Auitin Wi& liams. 1 OBITUARIES GOPWIN L. COTTON Godwin L. Cotton, 79, father of Mrs. Marion Best of Morehead City, and of Mrs. L. T. Math is of Beau fort, died at his home in James town, S. C., Tuesday, May 20. Funeral services were held at the Jamestown, S. C., Baptist church Thursday, May 22. Cotton at one time had been con nected with the Wilaon Lumber company of Beaufort. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, three step-daughters, * step-son "and eight grandchildren. MRS. HANNAH NELSON Funeral services for Mrs. Han nah Nelson, 67, who died at her home at Harkers Island Friday afternoon, were held in the Pente costal Holiness church, Harkert la land, at 2 o'clock Saturday after noon. Burial was in the community cemetery. Mrs. Nelson is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Sabra Lewis, Mrs. Mildred Lewis, Mrs. Elizabeth Guthrie, Mrs. Josie Philpott, one son, Dalton, and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Wade, all of Harkers I( laad. Course Postponed The refresher course in church membership scheduled for tomor row night in the First Methodist church has been postponed because of commencement. The Rev. The Univer sity of Texas Department of Geog raphy helped settle the question of how many states have capitals closer to Amarillo than the Texas capital at Austin. Dr. Donald Brand, g?ography professor, said the answer is three. With a big globe and calipers Dr. Brand's assistants measured these geographic airline distances: Ama rillo to Santa Fe, N. M. ? 230 miles; Amarillo to Oklahoma City, Okla. ? 240 miles; Amarillo to Denver, Colo.? 355 miles. Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle is 415 miles from Austin. All other capitals were farther away than Austin.
