This colony's chief Olympic hopes are riding on the shoulders of Neo Chwee Kok, a young Chinese swimmer who has never been beaten. "That's the whole trouble with Neo," said Secretary D. E. Strick land of the Singapore Olympic and Sports council, "he doesn't know what it is to chase somebody. He always jumps into the lead and just stays there so we really don't know too much, except that he's good." Just how good the 20-ycar old student is can be judged by a re cent performance in which he swam iuO metres in 56 seconds. The Olympic record is 57.3 seconds. Besides Neo there will be four other swimmers on the Colony's Olympic entry, as well as two weight lifters and two track com petitors. The 1948 games at London mark ed the first time Singapore sent a team to the Olympics. One man qualified in the high jump. This time, however, the colony hopes for a better showing and about 30 citizens are planning to go along to Helsinki as a cheering section. Paralyzed Youth Is Star Athlete Houston, Tex.(AP)? The kids in Phil DePrato's block wondered why the newspapers wanted to do stor ies on Phil and his athletics. Sure he's the best player in the gang, they said, but why all the fuss? Phil has been paralzed from the waist down since birth and the fact that he plays football, baseball and basketball naturally would be con sidered news. Each afternoon the kids in his block come around for football, baseball or basketball, whichever is in season. When it comes to choosing sides, 13-year-old Phil is taken first. He's quarterback in football, calls the plays and tosses the passes on' offense; on defense he wears a cap and when somebody cuts a round end, Phil moves his wheel chair in that direction, throws the cap and if it hits the ball-carrier that person considers himself tag ged. He's mighty accurate. In baseball, Phil asks only one concession. A runner stands be hind his wheel chair, ready to run to first when Phil hits the ball. His parents run a split shift on his education? in the morning his mother gives him half of his les sons; at night his father takes over the other half. He keeps up with regular school work. "Phil has not only learned to overcome his handicap but the | other children have helped him in [ accepting him as being just 'one ! of the gang,' " says Mrs. DePrato. "It's something that's hard to put into words." Skin Reactions Foretell Ability Boston (AP)? Can a coach or manager tell if his star pitcher is in rare form or if he will be in the showers before the first inning is over? Can a trainer tell in ad vance if the football team will be "up" for the big Saturday game? Dr. John Harmon, professor of education at Boston U., says such I information can be found quite j simply and accurately. It's all in j the skin. Dr. Harmon has been working on the relations of physical and ment al conditions for over 20 years. He has developed a simple method of testing skin resistance to an elec trical current passed through the skin. An athlete who has a high skin resistance before a game will probably play below par, while a player with a low resistance will be more likely' to turn in an outstand ing performance. 1 "We tried it during the 1949 football season," says the professor, "measuring the skin resistance of the players before the games. Be fore the Maryland game the play ers showed a low skin resistance and played an outstanding game al though they were beaten by a superior team. "Our work is still in the research stage," the Boston university peda gogue admits, "and we still have to establish norms for variables such as age. Up to now, however, the results of our work have been encouraging." 10 RACES NlflELY RAIN OR CLEAR . .EXCEPT SUNDAYS ? DAILY. DOUBLE 1st & 2nd Races * QUINELAS 2nd to 10th Races jTofclght ...
