Leatherneck in Camp Lejeune wko sometimes lies awake at night. He recalla the past ... a Naii guard swinging a club ... the wailed a larm of the escape siren ... the babel of FEAR ? in seven lan guages. He turns over in his bunk and thanks God, for he can smile ? now. Jerzy Fedorowicz was born in Splawy, Poland, in 1931, and moved soon after with his mother and fa ther to the city of Czensposbow. There he grew up. The Germans marched on War saw, and for a year the shadow of occupation fell lightly on Czens poshow. But in September, 1940, the conscriptors of "voluntary" la bor moved in. Jerzy, then nine years old, was packed into a cattle truck with his parents; their destination was un known. Their place of confinement, as they discovered weeks after they arrived, was in eastern Germany. Within the stockades of that Pri son Labor Camp the Fedorowicz family was to spend nearly ftvo years. Each morning at three o' clock the day's work started. Po lish, French. German, Belgian and Russian all lined up for the bread to fortify them through 14 hours' heavy farm labor. Sometimes Sunday was a holi day. But there were no religious services, no games. The prisoners just lay on their straw cots and stared at the low wooden ceiling. One night a small band planned an escape. It had been attempted before, with a reward of insecure freedom or death. The scheme was simple: a guard had been bribed and would leave a shadowed section of the stockade untended for a few minutes. A short run would take the rebels to LEGAL NOTICES Beaufort Housing Corporation, a North Carolina corporation with its principal place of business in Beau fort, North Carolina, to A. B. Scott and T. C. Hoyle, Jr., Trustees, for Atlantic Life Insurance Company, dated September 25, 1945, and re corded October 24, 1945 in Book 110. page 143, in the office of the Register of Deeds of Carteret Coun ty, North Carolina, default having been made in the payment of the indebtedness thereby secured and said deed of trust being by the terms thereof subject to foreclos ure, the undersigned trustees will offer for sale at public auction to the highest bidder for cash at the Court House door in Beaufort, Nortta Carolina, at noon on August 30. 1952, the property conveyed in said deed of trust, the same lying and being near the Town of Beau fort, County of Carteret, State of North Carolina, and more particu larly designated and described as follows: All of lot 27 in Block 5. as shown on the plat entitled "Property of Beaufort Housing Corporation," same having been prepared in Feb ruary 1945. and recorded in Book 1. page 226 of the Carteret County Public Registry. A five per cent deposit will be required of the successful bidder to show good faith. This the 23rd of July, 1952. A. B. SCOTT and T. C. HOYLE, Trustees. )29 a 5-12-19 the ?tockadc, and, they hoped, the freedom beyond. They choose a moonless night. Aa the small gang broke {or the stockade a siren wailed; floodlights blinded th?m. An unexpected ma chine gun punched holes in their ranka. Just one man finished the short dash to the wire stockade. He was hanged ? next morning as the pri soners trudged out from breakfast. Retributions continued ' for months. A word between friends was interpreted as conspiracy. The feared "gummiknippel", the guards' rubber club, descended without cause. Hundred of men, women and children died. Again the monotony of the pri son descended. Jerzy remembers the exact hour the U. S. 3rd Army arrived. For weeks rumors had heralded the fall of Berlin beneath Patton's drive to the east. At 6:30 pm on April 15, 1945, the Fedorowicz family watch ed the Stars and Stripes ascend the pole which had so long flaunted the swastika. But it was five long years before Jerzy reached the United States. He lived with his family in Dis placed Persons' Camps in Germany and Belgium. While Mr. Fedoro wicz worked again at his old trade, bricklaying, Jerzy attended camp schools and perfected his know ledge of five languages. In July, 1950, under the auspices of the international Refugee Or ganization, the Fedorowicz family left Europe for a new world -and an experience almost forgotten ? democracy. The young Marine's family mi grated to Youngstown, Ohio. His father is working now with a lum ber company; he has a home which his wife keeps, like any American housewife. Jerzy entered the Marine Corps in March, 1952. Following recruit training at Paris Island, S. C? he was assigned to the Post Exchange Section of the Second Marine Di vision stationed here. Above all, he feels his experien ces have taught him one thing -an appreciation of freedom. "You can live in misery under tyrants", Jerzy told us, " and nearly forget what democracy means. I'm grateful to this country for reminding me. I may be able to prove that gratitude in the Marine Corps." In ancient times, giraffes were called camelopards because they appeared to resemble camels with leopard coloration. GLOBE - WERHCKB Ottice Equipment and Supplies Commercial Printing ?
