Thompson The New Testament writers, be ing familiar with their national sports, compared the good life, the Christian life, to chariot races, gladiators' contests and wrestling matches. To bp victorious one must think of himself as running a race, fighting against the powers of darkness, combatting the forces of evil. They never heard of our na tional pastime. However, when we read "I have finished the course," the writer must have had an inkling of the coming of the great, new, wonder game of golf. And it is just that. It gets' into your blood stream. You seldom do, but you're always going to beat old man par. Defeated today, you'll win on the morrow. Yes, it is a good game. You're never too young to learn, never too old to play. In the North and South senior tournament there were 232 con testants. None under 55 years old, some in their 80's. They represent ed 27 states, the District of Colum bia and Canada. What fun, what fellowship they had together. Herein lies the secret of success. It makes for lasting friendships, the deepest loyalties. It is a gen tleman's game. No scandals. No pro has ever sold out. Oh yes, Dec. 22 ? On Sunday night the choir of the Ocracoke Methodist church presented a special Christ mas program, Christmaa songs in terspersed with the reading of a story by Mrs. Benjamin Spencer. Mrs. Fletcher Hoggard sang "O Holy Night;" a quartet, composed of Mrs. Hoggard, Miss Blanche Howard, Calvin O'Neal, jr., and Danny Garrish sang "Now the Day is Over." On Wednesday night, the Sunday school will have its annual pro gram. This year it is entitled "The Trimming of the Tree." Songs by the choir and poems read by a 1 speech choir will tell the meaning Liiile Change in Wealher As Winter Arrives Here The arrival of winter in Carteret county brought little change in weather conditions although tem peratures dropped slightly. Watermelon Fizzles Lewistown, Mont. (AP) ? Water melon growers in Georgia needn't worry about competition from Mon tana. Lyal Viers spent t.ie summer carefully cultivating a watermelon plant. The first frost of the fall froze his melon just when it got as big as a good-sized orange. *?PP/E CUf2K?NT// CLVPE B LAN CHAW) there are those whose score card needs looking over, some who find fault with the way the wind blows and the way you blow your nose. These are minor ills, to be laughed off. The great majority of golfers are men of character. The finest tribute of golfers are men of char acter. The finest tribute paid President-Elect Eisenhower is "he loves to play golf." In one of the great churches of England there is a stained glass window dedicated to golfers. It is understood that the Village Chapel at Pinehurst, which has been a golfer's shrine for 50 years, plans to do likewise. Why not? Well, what about the 19th hole? The game is done and you're talk ling it over. What's your score? In the play Cyrano de Bergerac, made famous by our Walter Hamp den, the hero never broke par. in fact he had been in a sand trap most of his life. But undaunted, undismayed he fought on: "To night as I stand before God, He will find my white plume unsoiled, my integrity unassailed." A trifle too dramatic for the average golfer. I think he will be content and able to say, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, 1 have kept the faith." The above meditation by Chap lain Frank M. Thompson of Pine hurst is reprinted from Golf World. of each of the types of trimming ? bells, stars, canes, gifts, as the children of the Sunday school bring them forward to the tree trimmers. The Assembly of God is having its Christmas program on Tuesday night, presenting two Christmas plays, with various members of the Sunday school taking part. The Willing Workers' class of the Methodist church met last Tuesday night at the church par lors. Mrs. Doris Ballance presided. Mrs. Sprrcer read the O'Henry I Christmas story. Gifts were ex changed. Hostesses were Mrs. Lu [ cfle Garrish, Mrs. Iva Garrish, Mrs. Martha Jane Gaskins and Mrs. i Daisy Gaskill. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Austin of Hatteras are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Junius Austin and family. Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Williams, of Patuxent River, Md., are home with their parents for the Christmas season. Miss Brittina Garrish, now in the Air Corps at Denver, Colo., will be home shortly on leave for Christmas. Her sister, Grace Gar rish, will also be home from Rich mond. Charlie Jones of Norfolk spent several days at the Green Island club, returning to Norfolk today with Carleton Kelly, for Christmas at home there. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Boyette left Thursday to spend several days with Mrs. Boyette's relatives On the mainland. Chaplains (Continued from Page 1) "In many overseas areas, be it Panama, Alaska, Europe, or Japan, the programs will be such that the stateside atmosphere will be evi dent ? special services in well appointed chapels, Christmas con certs and all such observances as were known in the home communi ties. The presence of the depend ents of military personnel will play a major role in these functions. "Candlelight services and the Midnight Mass will stir the hearts of all. In the action area of Korea, the chaplains will likewise provide the religious services which are the heart of the Christmas observ ance. The bunker and foxhole are a far cry from a decorated chi*:cL or chapel, but the message of Christmas will also be there. "But Christmastime is always a sharing time and added impetus will be given to the military per sonnel in their concern for the homeless and orphan children of the countries in which they are stationed. Added meaning comes to the soldier away from home when he is able to bring joy and happiness to a youngster who nor mally is in circumstances which do not allow for Christmas activities. From Germany, which gave us the Christmas tree, to far-away Japan and Korea, countless thousands of children will learn to say 'Merry Christmas' at parties and programs arranged by Army personnel. Tbeir hearts will be gladdened by good things to eat . and the singing of Christmas songs. Their eyes will be a little bigger when they see that familiar long-bearded fellow in the red suit trimmed with white, whose bag of presents for children never gets empty because of the Christmas spirit in the hearts of Army personnel."
