Wrestling Promoters
Provide Dogs for Blind
Wrestling Promoter Sam Muchnick handing Paul Knoules of the
leader Dogs for the Blind a resolution for benefits.
St. Louis (AP) The nation's
wrestling promoters are lending a
helping hand to the blind with
an effort to help relieve a shortage
of guide dogs.
The National Wrestling alliance
has a plan to raise funds for Lead
er-Dogs for the blind, a non-profit ;
agency that trains guide dogs at !
Rochester. Mich. A blind wrestling
promoter, Leroy McGuirk of Tulsa,
Okla., enlisted the suport of his
colleagues in the cause.
Sam Muchnick of St. Louis, pres
ident of the alliance, announced
the organization has voted to con
tribute annually 25 per cent of
gross receipts after taxes of one
show of each affiliated promoter
and booker. This means about 500
benefit shows annually, Muchnick
said.
The cost of development and
adequate training for a guide dog
has been placed by Leader-Dogs
for the blind at about $1,250 and
consequently only about 400 dogs
are trained each year.
German Boy's Smile Buys
Food, Doughnut and Milk
Billings, Mont. (AP) A boy's
smile bought a doughnut and a
glass of milk at the* Billing* aft
port.
Uwe Mahlfield. 11, stopped here
on his way from Germany to Pasco,
Wash., and the mother he hasn't
seen for ofur years. Uwe ? it
rhymes with movie doesn't know
a word of Knglish. but a quick
smile got him the food. It was the
first time he had seen a doughnut.
His mother. Mrs. Elwood Dwinell
of Pasco, left Germany with her
GI husband more than four years
ago. but she didn't have enough
money to take Uwe, her son by a
former marriage.
Almost 11 per cent of the entir^
area of the United States is under
lain with coal.
McGuirk. former junior heavy
weight wrestling champion at Okla
homa A. and M.. wrestled for 11
years with vision in only one eye.
Later he became totally blind and
only last year acquired his own
guide dog.
Leader-Dogs for the Blind is one
of three organizations training
guide dogs in the United States.
Applicants, who must be totally
blind or have only slight light per
ception. are given a minimum of
four weeks of instruction with their
dogs.
Most of the guide dogs are Ger
man Shepherds, German Boxers,
and Labrador Retrievers, but Col
lies and other breeds that measure
up to the school's standards also
arc used.
