Three 'Wtty Cookies for Treat
-
Thrrf-wny rooklrs . . . After-school treat.
By Cecily Brownstone
Associated Press Food Editor
If you remember your own child
hood. you know that one of the
pleasantest things a mother can do
for small fry is to have a special
treat ready for them after school.
For one of these treats we suggest
this basic cookie with its three
variations to serve with hot choco
late.
These cookies are particularly
suitable for youngsters because the
usual recipe of this sort does not
ordinarily contain milk; this recipe
calls for a cup of nonfat dry milk
and so adds important nutrients
protein, calcium, riboflavin and
lactose. In addition, dry milk is
economical and easy to use in bak
ing; all you do is sift it with the
other dry ingredients.
You'll add extra nutrients to
their diet, too, if you make the
kid's hot chocolate with nonfat dry
milk as directed in the following
recipe.
Tlire*-W?y Cookies
Ingredients: 2 'i cups sifted
flour, 1 cup nonfat dry milk pow
der, 1 teaspoon baking powder, Vt
teaspoon salt, M teaspoon nutmeg,
1 cup shortening, 2% cups sugar,
2 eggs. 1 tHyoon vanilla, 1/3 cup
chopped tifl^ts or pecans, 1/3 cup
shredded coconut, 1/3 cup semi
sweet chocolate pieces.
Methad: Sift together flour, non
fat dry milk, baking powder, salt,
and nutmeg. Cream shortening and
sugar; beat in eggs and vanilla.
Beat in sifted dry ingredients until
blended. Divide dough into 3 equal
parts. To one part add the nuts; to
another the coconut; to another the
chocolate. Drop by teaspoonfuls
onto ungreased baking sheet a few
inches apart. Bake in moderate
(350F) oven 10 to 12 minutes or
until bottoms of cookies are brown.
Special Hot Chocolate
Ingredients: 3 cups water, %
cup nonfat dry milk powder, pinch
of salt, V< cup sugar, 2 squares (2
ounces) unsweetened chocolate
grated.
Method : Pour water info top part
of double boiler. Sprinkle nonfat
dry milk, salt and sofar over
water. Beat with rotary beater un
til just blended. Add grated ehoco
