Newport Edges Jacksonville To Continue Victory Streak By Charles M. H1U Newport boys basketball team had ita biggest scare of the season Tuesday night before finally win ning from a sharp shooting Jack sonville quintet 61-57. Seeking their 23rd consecutive victory, the locals had their hands full from the opening whistle as the Onslow boys played the type of ball that had been predicted for them all season. Newport opened the scoring but Jacksonville, working the ball in beautifully for lay-ups. kept pace to tie the score at 13-13 after a quar ter. In the second quarter, New port got a four-point lead which they never gave up and which even tually won the game. Roy Dennis and Manning led this surge which moved the score to 35-31. As. the second half opened New port widened the gap to seven points and maintained this until the last two minutes. In the last minutes, Newport elected to shoot rather than freeze and almost lost the game as Jacksonville got away for two quick baskets. Coach Wayne Benton then called time, or dered the freeze and Smith, Cul pepper and Lilly ran out the clock. I r Sidney Manning led the scoring again with 20 points mostly on re bounds. Roy Dennis followed with 13 though he fouled out late in the game. As was expected Red Warren, 5-9 guard, led Jacksonville with 23 points. He drove in for lay-ups and when the defense lagged he sank set shots The most valuable man in this win was substitute Larry Smith who started for Billy Widgeon and played most of the game. He moved the ball well, dribbled ex pertly, led the rebounding on de fense and was the floor leader with his scrapping play. In the second half. Smith guarded War ren and turned in a good job. Wid geon got into the game for a few minutes but Ihowed the effects of his sickness. Jacksonville which usually uses the zone defense used the man for man and full court press instead. This type of defense is usually easy for the Newport team but without Widgeon they were unable to take advantage of the fast break. Red Warren is one of the best players to piay in the local gym all year. Newport will close its most suc cessful basketball season in history tonight when it plays a return game with Beaufort in the local gym. In the first game early in the season, Beaufort played without one of their best pla)>ers and New port defeated them by a wide mar gin in a low-scoring game. Since then Coach McQuaid has brought his boys along nicely and has moulded them into the second best team in the conference. They hold two lop-sided wins over Morehead City and a pair of close wins over Jones Central. Billy Eudy and Gehrmann Holland, jr., will lead the Beaufort attack. If Billy Widgeon doesn't regain full strength by Friday Newport will be in for a rough night and may see the end of their 23-game win streak. Even at full strength the locals are expecting a very close game. The tight game with Jacksonville should help prepare the boys for this most important season finale. Newport will start Lloyd Culpep per and either Widgeon or Larry Smith at forwards, Sid Manning center, and Roy Dennis and Levy Lilly at guards.
