During the month of May li
censes were granted by the State
Board of Public Welfare to eight
organizations to conduct fund-rais
ing campaigns through public soli
citations for the support of their
programs, it was announced yester
day by Dr. Ellen Winston, commis
sioner.
Six of these organizations were
relicensed in accordance with pro
visions of the state solicitation law.
They are the American Foundation
for Overseas Blind, the Seamen's
Church Institute of New York, and
the United Negro College fund, all
of which have headquarters in New
York City; the Grace Home for
Women at Shulls Mills, North
Carolina; the Highlands Biological
Station at Highlands, North Caro
lina; and the Pioneer Girl Scout
Area Council with headquarters at
Gastonia.

Marine Recruit Training
Marine Pfc. Glen Deibert, son
of Mr. and Mrs. John Deibert of
Morehead City, route 1, was pro
Pfc. Glen Deibert
moted to his present rank when
he graduated from the Parris Island
recruit depot.
He won the marksman medal
on the rifle range after firing a
score of 206 out of a possible 250
during his weapons training. Be
fore entering the Marine Corps,
he was employed by the govern
ment as a mechanic. He is a grad
uate of the Morehead City high
school.

that the county could find itself in
serious financial difficulties if the
requests were granted.
George Cottingham, Boaufort
electrician, appeared to ask the
commissioners if the county has
any laws with regard to electrical
work. He said that the county
electrical inspector had refused to
pass a jpb which lie had done in
Merrimon.
Mr. Cottingham said that the
work conformed to all require
ments of the national electrical
code and wished to know if the
county had a code stricter than the
national code. He said that a state
inspector had informed him that
the work was all right.
The commissioners said that they
knew of no county electrical code
and voted to refer the matter to
the state inspectors for an opinion.
Bill Wright asked the commis
sioners to appropriate money for
a full page advertisement in The
State magazine's forthcoming Car
teret county edition. He said that
the page would cost about $186. He
cited the advantages of an ad to
the county and said that the is
sue might be instrumental in bring
ing industries to the county.
The commissioners agreed that
the ad would be a good idea but
said that they would have to see
if the money is available. They
said that they hoped to be able to
give Mr. Wright an answer within
a short time.
Dan Walker, Beaufort town
clerk, asked the county to sell the
town some property south of the
West Beaufort road. He offered
the county $1 for the property,
about 4.1 acres along the water. It
was decided to defer action pending
a check with the Civil Aeronau
tics Administration with regard to
restrictions on building near the
airport.
The commissioners voted to ac
cept as part of the county road sys
tem 500 feet of road in Marshall
berg. Part of the road is already
on the system but the remainder
is not. Residents on the road, the
Lewis-Moore road, want it graded
and drained to make it passable.
The board also approved a re
quest to take over the maintenance
of 700 feet of road in Broad Creek.
Residents of the road asked that
it be dragged and drained. Eight
families live along the road which
extends from the paved road to
Bogue Sound.
At the request of Alvah Hamil
ton, the board adopted a resolution
favoring the proposed coastal high
way along the outer banks. The
board asked for the paving of a

Sergeant Leslie D. Feagle, III,
arrived recently after a 12 months
tour of duty with the First Marine
division in Korea.
He visited his sister Mrs. Ray F.
Garrett of Morehead City.
Sergeant Feagle will be sta
tioned at Camp Lejeune after a
30-day leave.
Sgt. Kenneth O. Tootle, son of
Mrs. Fannie Tootle, Rt. 1, Morehead
City, is returning to the United
States after serving in Korea with
the 45th infantry division.
Sgt. Tootle, a squad leader with
Company I of the 179th infantry
regiment, has been in Korea since
last June. He entered the army in
November 1951 and received his
basic training at Fort Ord, Cal.
Ernest F. Garner, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Roy T. Garner of Newport,
route 1, has been advanced to the
rank of fireman, USN, while serv
ing aboard the battleship USS Mis
souri.
The Missouri recently concluded
its sccond tour of duty with United
Nations forces in the Korean
theater.
Robert E. Willis, 19, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Martin L. Willis of Beau
fort is completing his basic airmen
indoctrination course at Lackland
Air Force base, Texas, it was re
ported this week.
The basic training prepares the
airmen for entrance into technical
training and for assignmet to spe
cialized work.

blood in the Red Cross blood
, donors program.
A total of 1,468 pints was collec
ted last week. Captain Paul
Vaughn, USN, senior medical offi
cer on the base, and L. D. Williams,
Red Cross field director, leaders of
the drive, expressed great satis
faction with the results.
All of the blood is sent to the
armed forces for use in Korea. Cap
tain Vaughn credited the organiza
tion of the drive with the success
of the campaign.
Five blood-donor drives have
been conducted on the base. The
first one took place in March, 1952.
The drives are arranged at approx
imately three-month intervals. The
first campaign resulted in 1,091
! pints; the second, 1,142; the third,
1.309; the fourth, 1,442; and the
last, 1,468.
The next drive has been tenta
tively set for mid-September. The
quota is expected to be 1,500 pints
of blood.

grading and draining of 1.5 miles
of road in the Mill Creek section.

county recorder's court, $85.08
from the superior court, $95.30
from probate and clerk's fees, $835
from the Morehead City court and
$90 from F. R. Seely, justice of the
peace. Total amount paid to the
county was $3,481.38.
The board accepted the settle
ment of uncollected and insolvent
taxes and authorized that they be
turned over to the sheriff for col
lection. The taxes amounted to
more than $6,000.
The board also authorized Mr.
Potter to turn the 1953 tax books
over to E. O. Moore, county tax col
lector.
