Cocoanut Shall* Spread
Disease in South Seas
Los Angeles (AP) ? The cocoa
nut, economically important to the
South Seas, plays a part in filari
asis, a disease that plagues millions
throughout the islands, says Dr.
David Bonnet of the University of
California, (L.A.).
Major carrier of the filariasis,
the mosquito, seems to breed any
where there are a few drops of
water. A favorite breeding place
is in rainwater-filled cocoanut
shells and small holes in growing
cocoanuts, gnawed by rats.
