Met Stars Are Becoming
Good Looking in New Era
By W. G. ROGERS
AimcUIH Press Arts Editor
New York - (AP) ? Remember
the good old days 'when sopranos
were short, (at and tubby, with
maybe a mole on the chin?
Remember how you used to go
to the Metropolitan Opera and shut
you eyes not so much to swoon ov
er the music as because you really
couldn't bear to look?
Maybe those days weren't so bad
as some scoffers pretend, but any
way, they seem to be gone now.
Sopranos, and mezzos, too, at the
Met are getting as good looking
as any Broadway belles. A guy who
whistles at a pair of ankles on 42nd
Street may get a chorine, or may
get tomorrow's Flagstad.
Irmxard Srefrlfd
Blanche Thebom, the mezto,
helped start this welcome fashion.
Elena Nikolaidi carried it on; and
now there's a newcomer absolute
ly guaranteed as an eye-opener.
lrmgard Seefried, dark-haired,
round-faced, sparkling Viennese.
You may have heard her in recit
al ? in New Orleans, in Boston or
the many other cities she has visit
ed on three American tours. She
has just been heard for the first
time in New York opera, as the Su
sanna in the Met's first "Marriage
of Figaro*' of the 1953-54 season.
If it was a new stage to this
singer, it was not a new part. It
was her 300th Susanna, she said,
and she recalls that she sang it
28 times in just one month when
the war was over and music re
turned full-scale to Vienna.
But in opera, handsome is as
handsome does, and Miss See
fried passes that test, too. She
won warm praise for her first
night, and will repeat the perform
ance five more times before going
back to Austria ?t the end of De
cember. She is a serious, dedicated
singer. In her recitals she has pre
pared eight programs, where anoth
er soprano might have made do
with half as many. She is adding
American songs to her repertory,
too, by Samuel Barber. William
Schuman and Paul Nordoff. among
others, and plans to program them
in her native land.
She talks with the same appeal
ing sort of naturalness which made
her Susanna so agreeable. In her
apartment, as on the stage, she
moves fast and never mind the
consequences. On stage a quick
With Sally Forrest Acting
Comes First, Cooking Later
By MARK BARRON
Now York ? One nice thing
about Sally Forrest is that she ad
mits she isn't a good cook. Another
nice thing is that she is a terrifical
ly good actress.
Also it is nice knowing Miss
Forrest because she is of great as
sistance to newspapermen. The oth
er afternoon I was trying to locate
a prominent actress in connection
with a news story. Miss Forrest
was on the telephone at the mom
ent and I explained my problem.
In five minutes she called back
with the telephone number. If
any editor wants a good cub re
porter, 1 recommend Miss Forrest.
She tells me that she has finally
bowed to the inevitable and is go
ing to do the lead in a Broadway
play. She hasn't done a play be
fore. The title is "Debut" and Miss
Forresl said for us Broadway crit
ics not to start cracking about "De
but and Finis."
Miss Forrest also appears on TV.
One of her TV dates was in the
leading role in the first script
ever written for video by William
Faulkner, the 1950 Nobel Prize
winner.
It was an extraordinary encount
er between an engaging actress and
a talented author, because Mr.
Faulkner needs a long time to say
what he has to say. Some of his
speeches run more than 125 lines.
Miss Forrest is the star in the
new MGM picture "Code Two" for
which there was a big Broadway
premiere.
