Judge Berates Parents
Who Let Youna Baby Die
Chicago ? (AP) ? The parents
if a dead baby remained silent in
Family Court last week while a
judge took them to task for their
refusal on religious grounds to per
mit a blood transfusion which
night have saved the infant's life.
The 8-day-old baby died on Jan.
14. several hours after the parents
refused to sign a waiver which
*ould have permitted an immedi
ite Family Court hearing on the
question of legally forcing a trans
fusion.
The parents, Thomas Grzyb, 20
ind Barbara. 18, are members of
he Jehovah's Witnesses religious
sect.
Judge Thomas E. Kluczynski de
dared in court that the parents
"held everybody else from help
ing the child, while the child's
life uas ebbing away by minutes
and seconds."
The judge said the Illinois Su
p rente Court has held "that par
ents have no right to impose their
religious beliefs on a third person
to cause the death of that person ."
The parents had been summoned
into court on a petition to declare
them unfit parents and make their
infant a ward of the state. How
ever. Judge Kluctynskl dismissed
the petition after the parents at
torney said that sine* the child
was dead, there was no further is
sue involved.
