Seek Eight Million
For Overseas Relief
New York, N. Y. ? Major Prot
estant and Eastern Orthodox
churches in Amcrica will be asked
for more than $8,000,000 in cash
for 1954 programs of relief and re
construction in overseas areas of
need.
This was announced today by
Harper Sibley, chairman of Church
World Service, in launching the
1954 United Appeal for Relief and
Reconstiuction, the sixth annual
cooperative appeal of the denom
inations working together under
the sponsorship of the Central De
partment of Church World Service
of the National Council of the
Churches of Christ in the U. S. A.
Korea. Germany and Austria,
Yugoslavia, India, Pakistan and the
Near East are major areas to be
covered by the 1994 united appeal.
In these areas emergency relief
(food, shelter, clothing, medicine)
is desperately needed to relieve
suffering among the homeless and
the destitute while rehabilitation
and reconstruction programs are
vital to restoration of spiritual and
physical sufficiency.
High point -in the 1954 united
appeal will be the "One Great
Hoar of Sharing" observances with
special services la tfeaaaaads of
American churches oa Sunday,
March ?. when special relief of
ferings will be made.

Horses Taught
Snowshoe Use
Vancouver ? (AP) ? Some
horses have been taught to use
snowshoes on northern British Co
lumbia winter trails and Morley
Shier has produced snapshots of
horses so equipped to convince
doubters. ?
Shier said he first saw a horse
on snowshoes in 1919 when he wan
hiking from Stewart, B. C., to Pre
mier Mine.
Later he saw several pack trains
of horses with snowshoes and was
given one of the shoes by J. (Bill)
Crawford, Stewart merchant.
Shier said at one time round
boards were used. Now horse snow
shoes are a circle of \ inch pipe,
12 inches in diameter, with chains
to ih# centre and clips for the
At -first a horse is troubled, but
k6oo learns the trick of putting one
shoe over the other in walking on
snow. When a shoe gets loose, the
horse will stop, look back, and
wait for an adjustment.
