We Discover Karabeth Had
Clot in Brain at Birth
Part II
Karabeth sat alone when she
was nine months old. She started
pulling herself in her playpen and
"walking" around in it when she
was a year old. Yet she still
crawled on the flat of her stom
ach.
When she was 18 months old and
had not started walking I began
to wonder why. I had expected
her to walk early because when
she was only three months old
I would let her pretend she was
walking on the bed.
She would step all over the bed
while I held her. 1 did not walk
until I was 16 months old. The
Mauneys assured me it was a
Mauney trait. Zeb did not walk
until he was 23 months old. Every

one assured me there was nothing
wrong, she was just premature,
give her time.
Holland Millis, son of one of my
friends, was nine months younger
than Karabeth. I held his hands
one day and I noticed he hardly
put any weight on my hands white
Karabeth put all her weight on
my hands.
I asked Mary Catherine, Hol
land's mother, to try them to see
the difference. I began to search
for an answer. I took Karabeth
to a doctor in Morehead City. He
gave her a thorough examination
and said her health was perfect
and he could find nothing wrong
with her.
However, ijt was not normal for
a child of her age not to be walk
ing. All I got was the same old
answer; she is premature, give hef
I time. I felt there was some reason
why Karabeth could not walk. I
couldn't wait for time so I kept
searching.
I took Karabeth to a clinic in
New Bern Oct. 5, 1949. We had
a long tiresome waiting period. It
was after lunch before our turn
came.
Specialist Examines Baby
A doctor from Raleigh examined
Karabeth. He said, "She has had
an inner cranial hemorrhage at
birth and there is a clot of blood
which will have to dissolve.
"It may be two years or more
before she walks. You put her be
tween your knees and try to teach
her to balance herself. Work at
this one hour each day."
I worked hard and long at this
but I couldn't see the slightest im
provement. I would stand her with
her back to the wall and try to get
her to walk to me.
I took Karabeth back to the
clinic for checkups. Each time we
had a long and tiresome day.
During the summer of 1949 we
visited my aunt in South Carolina.
My aunt told me one of her friends
had a child who was handicapped.
He had cerebral palsy.
She told me that her friend,
Ruby, had learned in her years of
searching about a doctor Who was
world famous. She took her son
to be examined by him in New
York City.
Ruby had a nurse to take Jim
my to the doctor's school in Florida
for the winter. The nurse had
learned to give Jimmy physical
therapy and take care of him.
Jimmy was improving but he was
far more afflicted than Karabeth.
My aunt wondered if Karabeth
might have cerebral palsy and
wanted me to talk with Ruby. I
was very anxious to go, for here
was a new ray of hope.
That night we went to see Ruby.
She told me everything she knew
and I met Jimmy. Ruby showed
me the braces the doctor had ord

set at her feet, she seems to be

ered for Jimmy, his special table,
chair, and tricycle. There were
parallel bars in the back yard for
him to practice walking between.

other victims of cerebral palay.
As I read the book I knew Kar
abeth had cerebral palay. There
are aeveral typei of cerebral palsy.
Some have excees motion, some not
enough, and some are rifid. It
is caused by an injury to the
brain. The injury is permanent
and can never be cured.
It affects the control of muscles
or joints, the motor center of the
brain. Other parts of the brain
must be taught to do what the
damaged part was to have done.
These children must have help
and lots of it. They must be taufht
by constant repetition, which means
hard work and long hours.
Physiotherapy to learn to walk,
speech therapy to learn to talk, oc
cupational therapy to learn to help
themselves so that they may be in
dependent.
There are far more children born
with cerebral palsy than there are
victims of polio. There is a child
born with cerebral palsy every
hour.
These children usually have a
normal I. Q. Sometimes higher
than average than other children.
I will not attempt to tell you more
about cerebral palsy for I realize
my knowledge of it is still limited.
