Marcia Henderson Travels
i
Many Roads to Success
By MARK BARRON
New York ? Your initial prob
lem with Marcia Henderson is that
you naed a map, an atlas, a com
pass and the wherewithal to come
uack home ? 11 you want to come
back home. Slie travels some inter
esting journeys, so you might pre
fer to trail along.
At 22, she has traveled every
road in show business, most of
them successfully. She is still
venturing on new roads.
She has acting triumphs to her
credit on the Broadway stage, in
Hollywood movies, in dramatic
stock companies along the Atlantic
coatt, and in such radio and tele
vision shows as the Pulitzer Prize
Playhouse and Studio One. She
has been successful as a dancer and
singer and has been studying opera.
Now on Broadway, Miss Hen
derson reminded that the last time
we had greeted her was when
she was playing the role of Wendy
in the New York production of
"Peter Pan," a highly triumphant
production attracting audiences in
1951.
It was a delicate, sensitive, poetic
performance for which Miss Hen
derson received bouquets of the
critics. She was a flower to be
nurtured in a vase in a corner.
So wliat happened? Marcia Hen
dersoi. w.u clutched by the movies
and tossed around like a cotton
bale, a bundle of wolves' pelts and
similar objects so that by now she
feels like an actress who can take
anything.
"Mister," she said, "I've taken
the works."
Miss Henderson said she played
stock around New England. Her
native home is in Andover, Mass.

She said the bad no hopes of get
ting onto Broadway, so aha wont to
Chicago to play the lead in the
hit comedy. "Tha Moon ia Bine."
It was there that, the movie door
opened to her.
It is 'Thunder Bay" which haa
brought her back to Broadway.
Miss Henderson said that what
broadened her acting career was
her background of various roles.
That is understandable.
In the stage production of "Pe
ter Pan" she was elfin, poetic. In
"Back to God's Country." another
film, she must be, among other
things, a girl who drives dogs
through* the north wasteland. In
"Thunder Bay" she and Jimmy
Stewart dig for oil off the coast
of Louisiana.
"When we were shooting 'Thun
der Bay' I got a great lift," she
said, "because the people in New
Orleans and Baton Houge remem
bered me. I played there in the
stage production of 'The Moon Is
Blue.' And they welcomed me as
if I were a returning daughter.
"I hope what I do in the picture
measures up to their expectations.
Louisiana audiences will be the
most severe and, at the same time,
the most kind of my film critics."

Raleigh, Pi. C. (AP) r- North
Carolina automobile license plates
urge motorists to "Drive Safely."
The slogan printed on the auto
tags is part of a drive to reduce
highway accidents.
Motor Vehicles Commissioner
Kdward Scheidt said North Caro
lina is the first state to use a safe
ty slogan on its licenses. He orig
i inally planned to have the slogan
! appear on 1954 licenses. It wis
put into use six months ahead of
schedule when heavy automobile
registration made it necessary to
order a new series of 1953 plates.
