Production Snarls Delay
Polio Serum Inoculations
Due to delays in the manufacture
of the trial polio vaccine the na
tionwide validity tests are expected
to get under way in late March or
early April, it was announced today
by Basil O'Connor, president of the
National Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis.
Mr O'Connor said it had been
hoped that the injection of school
children taking part in the tests
could begin in February, but be
added:
"We have been confronted with
some of the usual production prob
lems that have to be expected in
the manufacture of any new pro
duct. Added to these has been the
length of time required to check
and re-check the many processes in
volved in converting the results
of any laboratory research into
commercial production on a large
scale. More of the problems en
countered is insuperable and all are
being rapidly solved.''
Mr. O'Connor also said: "While
production problems have post
poned the date for the start of the
trials, we plan to inoculate a suf
ficient number of children before

Steps Complicated
Preparation of large quantities
of a trial vaccine involves a series
of complicated steps, Mr. O'Con

"The virus is grown in tissue cul

"Most of It is grown at the C6n

under a grant from the National

Dr. Salk announced recently that
he was extending his studies to at
