Cecil Guthrie Appeals Two -Year Road Sentence Imposed Monday Cecil Guthrie on Monday ap pealed a two-year aentence on the roads, meted out by Judge George McNeill in More head City Record er'! Court. Judge McNeill act bond at $750. Guthrie wa? charged with peep ing into a woman's room and be ing drunk and diaorderly. He pled guilty to the drunk and dia orderly charge, but pled not guilty to the peeping torn charge. Guthrie was arrested March 12 by Highway Patrolmen J. W. Sykes and E. W Pickard in the 1500 block of Shackleford avenue. Pa trolman Sykes told the court that he saw Guthrie looking into the window of an apartment from an alley that enters the street. Patrolman Sykes said that Guth rie ran when he was discovered, running about in the neighborhood until captured by Patrolman Pick ard. Said He Was Drunk Guthrie told the court that he was drunk and was trying to get home by using the alley to escape being seen, lie said that he was walking up the alley, which he claimed was blocked by a fence, when he saw Patrolman Sykes. He said he ran to keep from being caught and was intercepted by Patrolman Pickard. Judge McNeill, however, found Guthrie guilty as charged. Five Negroes were allegedly in a fight and appeared to answer to charges of fighting and assault. Two cases were continued. They were against Joseph Anderson, charged with fighting and assault ing Harvey Horton Jr. with a knife, and Harvey Horton Jr., charged with fighting and simple assault. The court tried the three others. Clyde Jones snd George Dudley Jr., both charged with fighting and simple assault, were sentenced to 30 days on the streets. Dudley served notice of appeal to superior court. Judge McNeill set his bond at $200. Joseph Washington, also charged with fighting and simple assault, was sentenced to two weeks on the streets. The court heard' three drunk driving cases. Gordon Herbert Salter, charged with drunk driv ing, told the court that he wanted a jury trial. The case was docketed for the June term of superior court and his bond set at $100. Found Guilty John David Ambrose was found guilty of drunk driving and was sentenced to 90 days on the roads. The sentence will be suspended if Ambrose pays $100 fine and court costs. Prayer for judgment will con tinue two weeks in the case of William Fred Anderson, charged with drunk driving. Traffic violation cases heard by Judge McNeill were Frederick Ray Tillery, reckless driving, $10 and costs; James Edward Wadell, reck less driving, $10 and costs; and David L. Shirey, expired license plates, $10 and costs (second of fense). Paul D. Betts and Patricia Ains worth, charged with no operator's license, $25 and costs, the fine to be remitted if a valid license is shown to the clerk of court in 30 days. The state decided not to prose cute three traffic violation cases. Such was done on Harkers Island and Smyrna this year when one case of typhoid occurred on Harkers Is land. Children Stricken The health department has re ceived numerous reports of chil dren having "virus colds." Al though the sickness has been called whooping cough, Mrs. Leota Ham mer, health department nurse, said that usually the illness is not whooping cough. It is evidenced by violent cough ing and vomiting. Between 75 and 100 children at Ocracoke were af flicted with the virus colds re cently. Public health workers from Raleigh visited the island to in vestigate and said that the afflic tion was not whooping cough. There have been several cases of measles and chicken pox report ed also. The health department is con tinuing with its service to school children who must have tonsils re moved or other minor operations performed. The operations are authorized for children whose par ents cannot afford the treatment. Funds are obtained through an appropriation from the state au thorized by the legislature in 1849. Carteret's funds are limited, amounting to slightly more than $3,000 annually, the health de partment says. County surgeons perform the operations for a minimum fee at the Morehead City and Sea Level Hospitals Tfie health department said that the splendid cooperation of the doctors and the hospitals is deeply appreciated. Temperature Dips to Freezing | Following Sunday's forerunner I of summer weather, north winds blew into Carteret County forcing the mercury to dip below freezing early Tuesday morning. Monday the mercury fell from 67 during the day to 34 at night, according to Stamey Davis, More head City weather observer. Tues day continued cold as a strong north wind kept the mercury in the fifties during the day. Tem perature dropped to 31 at night.
