The Beaufort High Sea Dogs'
basketball team dropped into the
State Class A consolation bracket
Thursday after dropping its open
ing round game to Odell, Western
District Two champion, 76-40.
The Sea Dogs resumed action in
the State playoffs Friday at 4 p.m.
when they met Stanley, who also
dropped into the consolation brack
et after being trounced by Cary's
White Imps, 66-43.
Beaufort, playing before 500
fans at Aberdeen, kept pace with
Odell in the first period with Gehr
mann Holland, Beaufort's ace
guard, controlling the backboards.
Odell, with four boys over the
6 foot mark, were stymied by the
Sea Dog's unusual defense, having
to shoot from the outside which
they did with amazing accuracy.
Holland hit seven points in the
first period as the Sea Dogs trailed
by three, 18-15 at the end of the
initial stanza.
Fred Motley, 6-1 Odell sehior
center, sparked the Odell first per
iod attack. The Western District
champs were using a tight zone
i
that kept Beaufort working from
outside.
Odell, after a slow first period,
broke the game wide open in the
second frame, hitting 10 points in
the first three minutes of play as
Beaufort , went scoreless. Motley
and Kerr grabbed control of the
boards for the victors as Don Wil
liams and Dave Ballard teamed to
stretch the gap to 38-24 at half
time.
The front court press used by' the
Sea Dogs was causing them trouble
as Jim Willis, Beaufort center,
Murray Pittman, and Herb Mason
had three fouls before the
end of the first half. Willis was
ticketed with two straight fouls at
the end of the second stanza, put
ting him out of the game with
fiye foujs.

Hie brilliant play of Pittman and
Holland. The Odell quintet was
hitting from any angle while Beau
fort was unable to work the ball
in through Otfell's zone. They had
to keep on the outside and they
couldn't hit.
Jimmie Davis went into the Beau
fort lineup after intermission and
surprisingly led the Sea Dogs to
a short-lived rally. Beaufort nar
rowed the gap, 43-30, then fell be
hind as Odeil stretched its lead
behind Motley, Dave Ballard, and
Williams, hitting 24 points to Beau
fort's 11, to lead 60-35 at the three
quarter stop.
Beaufort wjs lobbing long passes
to the bucket to try and score but
the passes were being intercepted
by Odell's tall crew. Hugh Mason,
Beaufort forward, dropped a set ,
shot through the hoop as the buz
zer sounded for the end of the?third
period.
Odell started subbing in the
fourth stanza and continued to wi
den the gap. Pittman and Mason
were pressing the Odell guards,
tying the ball up frequently.
The Sea Dogs still weM
unable to work the ball in and
were held to five points in the
frame as Odell hit 14.
Pittman and Herb Mason had to
leave the game in the fourth per
iod, each picking up their fifth
fouls. Outstanding for the Sea
Dogs were Pittman, Holland, and
Hugh Mason.
Odell's front line of Motley, Kerr,
and Don Ballard stood out offen
sively and defensively lor the Wes
tern Distriet Champs. The Odell
crew hit 29 of 57 field goal at
tempts for 50 per cent. The Sea
Dogs hit 16 of 58 tries from the
field for 27 per cent, a new low
for the Eastern District champs.
The game was broadcast over
WMBL with Gray Hassell, of Beau
fort, doing the play-by-play and
Wiley Taylor Jr., also from Beau
fort, giving the highlights and sta
tistics.
The Odell club hit 20 of 33 char

caused frequent fouls. Odell gave
Beaufort only 16 chances from the
foul line with the Sea Dogs hit
