The Rav. Thurman Smith Guides Growth of Church IN lev. lliurnur?fip#fc conducts atvvfce By JMLTTH ALJENE TAYLOR The Rev. Thurman C. Smith came to Free Union Free Will Baptist Church, Sea Level, when it was facing one of its greatest crises in history. It was partly destroyed by the great tropical hurricane in September 1933, and completely destroyed by an electrical storm July 1946. Mr. Smith came to Free Union in December 1952. At that time the new sanctuary was just hulled in, and the building program was being carried on by the Ladies Aid with the help of a very few male members. It seems in answer to prayer of the faithful few that the windows of heaven were opened, and God sent to us a faithful and spiritual leader. Today the membership has in creased far beyond expectation, and the new sanctuary has been completed and is one of the most beautiful country churches in the county due to Brother Smith's leadership and interior decorating ability. The walls are finished in white and walnut trim. The floors are natural finished oak, and a rose wood tone frieze rug add to its beauty. The pews and nine-piece pulpit set are of a modern design, finished in* white enamel and wal nut trim to match the walls. In addition to this, chimes were installed by Brother Smith at a saying of approximately $500. The Mfctuary is also equipped with a modern nursery and mter commun ication system. The auditorium and Sunday Schobl room* have electric fans for summer comfort. About SO yards to the rear of the church among the beautiful pines is a recreation canter with modern rest rooms and running water. This was built at a coat of approximate ly $8,500. We feel that we have an edifice that U a source of pride to the community and a credit to the df nomination, and too much credit can not be given Brother Smith for the way he has labored with us. and only heaven will reveal his just reward. He frequently re minds us that God should have the glory for the increase and no in dividual or group. Mr. Smith is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaiah Smith of Deep Run. He married the former Ger tie Mae Howard of Beulaville. They have two sons, Sherwood of East Carolina College, and Edward with the United States Coast Guard. Brother Smith is making his home at Sea Level, serving the church as full time pastor, and spending his everyday life visiting among the homes, and down along the shore with the fishermen ai they go about their daily tasks. Brother Smith is better known as "Pappy" among the young peo plf. f}e has a personality that can not be surpassed, and is loved and respected by the community.
