During hot weather one of the
most important things to remem
ber in the management of livestock
such as hogs, cows, chickens, and
sheep is their comfort. Tests have
shown that hogs and chickens are
very sensitive to fluctuation in
temperature. These animals do
not have pores so they can sweat
and remove excess heat from their
body. As the weather gets hot
ter the animal's body gets hotter.
About the only way to keep
hens laying and hogs gaining dur
ing the heat of the summer is to
provide plenty of shade and a
supply of cool water. Brush type
shelters are cheap and easy to con
struct. Hog wallows may not be
attractive but they really help in
keeping hogs cool. Also buildings
constructed out of aluminum will
be cooler than those constructed
of other materials.
