8-3 Win Sunday; Second Ends in Tie
Beaufort Splits Twin Bill
With Atlantic 10-5, 7-3
Atlantic clingt to lint place .in
the county baseball loop after split
ting a double header Sunday at
Beaufort. Atlantic took the first
game 7-3 and Beaufort wrapped
up the nightcap with a 10-5 de
cision.
In the nightcap Atlantic scored
once in the top of the first, but
Beaufort bounced back in its half
with a five-run barrage to take the
lead. Four hits, an error, a walk,
and a sacrifice accounted for the
tallies.
The barrage was featured by Jim
Parkins' triple and doubles by El
vin Davis and Frank Langdale.
Beaufort's final tallies came in the
third, featuring homers by Cal
Hodges and Bob Schwark.
Gwaltney opened the frame with
a walk and Ottis Jefferson was safe
on an error. Cal Hodges promptly
scored them on his circuit clout off
Gary Morris.
Morris bore down and got two
outs. Parkins tripled an4 Schwark
greeted Morris with another four
bagger. Davis grounded to Bud
dy Willis at first to end the frame.
Atlantic picked up two in the
second and two in the fifth, high
lighted by doubles by John Hamil
ton and Buddy Willis.
Beaufort raked three Atlantic
hurlers for seven hits. Julian Wil
lis, starter, was charged with the
loss. Morris came on in the first
and was lifted for Harry Gerock in
the sixth.
Hodges was credited with the
win. He gave up four scattered
hits.
A four-run outburst in the sev
enth inning of the first game as
sured an Atlantic triumph after
leading 3-1 mcst of the way
Don Willis's double and Hamil
ton's single scored Atlantic's first
run in the opening frame. A single
by Jack Rose, and two errors sent
two more runs across in the fifth.
Three hits and two walks ac
counted for the seventh inning ral
ly, highlighted by Gerock's double.
Two walks and a single loaded
the bases. Gerock's double cleaned
the sacks. He scored on Hamil
ton's single. A walk and three
singles accounted for Beaufort's
two runs in the seventh.
Clyde Owens was charged with
the loss, giving up nine bingles.
Morris gathered in the win. He
was touched for five hits.
Atlantic's record is now 7-3.
Beaufort is in a three-way tie for
second place with 5-4.

To Add Nine Holes
To Golf Course
Work has been started on clear
ing fairways and building greens
for the nine-hole addition to the
New Bern Golf course, says R. L.
Pate, club president.
Barring unforseen delays, the
complete 18-hole course should be
ready for play in 90 days, stated
Mr. Pate.
The club's board of directors re
cently purchased a 55-acre tract of
land for the additional nine holes.
At a recent meeting contracts were
let for work on the course.
Ellis Maples, Raleigh, and Albert
Bell, New Bern engineer, design
ed and drew plans for the addition
al nine holes.

Weather Prevents Boats
From Making Big Catches
The fishing is still below par,
say Morehead City waterfronters.
Unstable weather is being
blamed. Only a few partyboats
have been going out, and those
have reported small catches
Boat owners say a break in the
weather should be coming soon.
? Ty Frost, Salter Path manager, is protesting Sunday's
loss to Morehead City in the county baseball loop. More
head topped Salter Path 8-3 in the first game.
The second game was tied 2-2 at the end of seven frames.
The game was halted at that point because of the 6 o'clock
curfew.
Frost is protesting the decision change of the base um
pire in the fifth inning in which4 -
Morehead scored six runs. Brad
Mcintosh, second man up, drew a
walk and went to second on Mitch
Guthrie's infield popper.
Rhubarb Develops
Harold Bass retrieved the ball
and heaved to Charlie Callahan
covering second. The base umpire
called Mcintosh out in a close play.
A rhubarb developed.
Morehead Coach Bob Butler
claimed Callahan pulled his foot
off the bag. After conferring with
the umpire-in-chief, the base um
pire changed his decision to safe.
The chief umpire ruled that Calla
han pulled his foot off the bag.
Frost claims Morehead players
threatened the base umpire, caus
ing him to change his decision.
Wade Bell, Morehead City, had to
be taken off the field, during the
rhubarb, by Morehead players.
That was the second of the
game's two rhubarbs. The first
arose in the fourth when More
head's Hall was called out coming
from third. Jim Willis poked a
grounder into short left and Guth
rie threw home to nip the attempt
ed run.
Ump Calls Hall Out
The throw, low and short, was
taken by Walt Thomas. As the ball
arrived so did Hall. Hall bumped
into Thomas kneeling on the base
path. The umpire called Hall out.
Morehead claimed Thomas failed
to tag Hall. Thomas did not drop
the ball when Hall ran into him.
Morehead City grabbed a one
run lead in the third frame of the
first game when Mcintosh singled,
made second, and went to third on
Jerry Pittman's bad throw at sec
ond. He scored on Bobby Willis'
deep fly to right.
Successive singles by Callahan
and Bass put runners on first and
third.' Bass stole second. Both men
scored when Hall dropped Guth
rie's fly in left in the fourth.
Guthrie advanced to second and
went to third on an infield out.
He scored on George Lewis' line
single to right. The rally ended
when Lloyd Frost and Walt Thomas
failed to hit.
Behind 3-1, Morehead sent six*
runs across in the fifth to wrap up
the triumph. A single, a walk, and
a fielder's choice loaded the sacks.
Culpepper's fielder's choice and
Kemp Wickizer's fly accounted for
two runs.
Jim Willis tripled driving in Cul
pepper and Hall, who had singled,
driving in Bobby Willis. Norm
Larkee singled Jim Willis home.
Morehead's final tally came in
the sixth on Callahan's error at sec
ond allowing Bobby Willis to score,
who singled to open the inning.
Culpepper gave up only three
hits in notching his second straight
win. He fanned nine. Thomas was
charged with the loss. He gave up
10 hits and fanned seven.
Martin Pitches
Bobby Martin, making his first
appearance on the rubber for
Morehead City, yielded three hits
as Morehead and Salter Path tied
the second game at 2-2 in seven
frames.
Salter Path racked up two runs
in the first on two walks, a single
and an error. Martin bore down
and whiffed the next three bats
men.
A pitchers' duel developed be
tween Martin and Salter Path's
Harold Deibert until the fourth
frame. Morehead pushed across a
run when Larkee drew a free pass,
stole second, and came home on
Culpepper's single.
Martin continued his effective
twirling until the final frame. He
gave up two hits in the fourth,
but came out unscathed. His team
mates tied it up in the last of the
seventh when Larkee's sacrifice
single scored Bobby Willis from
third. Willis opened with a walk,
took second on a sacrifice, and
went to third on a wild pitch.
Deibert Fans 12
Deibert fanned 12 Morehead bat
ters, giving up only three hits.
Martin fanned nine.
The game will be replayed at a
later date.
Morehead's Record is now 5-4.
Salter Path's is 5-3.

The final 18 holes were played
Friday.
In the men's division Grover
Munden topped Dick McClain 4 and
3 in the championship flight upper
bracket to meet Warren Bcck for
the men's crown. The Munden -
McClain semi-final match was
played Thursday.
The final match, for the men's
crown, will be played this week.
They will play 36 holes.

Smyrna Sunday. The score in both
games was 9-8 In taking the double
win Smyrna - Harkers Island
jumped into a four-way tie for sec
ond place in the county baseball
loop.
Wilson Davis, on the mound for
Smyrna-Harkers Island was given
credit for both triumphs. New
port's Waddell was charged with \
the first loss and Morton the sec- |
ond. Jerry Garner started the first ;
game, but was lifted for Waddell.
In the first game Newport scored
five runs in the second frame to
take the lead. Smyrna-Harkers Is
land came back with two and kept
pecking away.
They scored one each in the
third and fourth, two in the fifth
and three in the sixth. Newport
also scored three in the sixth.
Crawford Pigott, Jack Page, and
Norris Hill hit doubles for Smyrna
Harkers Island. Harry Lockey trip
led for Newport.
The second game went five in
nings before the curfew caught
up with the slugfest. Smyrna-Hark
ers Island scored nine in the
third inning which was enough for
victory.
Newport scored two in the third
and six in the fourth. R. Davis, Pig
ott and Bruce Babbitt connected
for doubles for Smyrna-Harkers
Island.
Newkirk and Billy Widgeon trip
led for Newport. Doubles were
hit by Culpepper and Harry Lock

Over Arapahoe 9-7
Norman Williams and Charlie
Gaskill led the Morehead City
Brownies to a 9-7 triumph Sunday
over the Arapahoe Bombers at
Arapahoe. It was the Brownies
opening game of the season.
Williams and Gaskill had a dou
ble and two singles apieee in the
11-hit attack that netted four runs
in the first, one each in the sec
ond, third and eighth, and two
in the ninth.
Arapahoe greeted Whip Collins
of the Brownies with eight bingles
to score once in the fourth, fifth,
and ninth, and four in the seventh.
