Traveling Men's Wives Must
Keep Busy, Singer's Wife Says
?y SANDBA mm
When singer Vaughn Monroe is
uti the rend hit wife beau the blues
it home by keeping buy.
Marion Monroe haa advice (or
other wives married to traveling
husbands:
"Don't become bored or sorry (or
youraeK. Develop a hobby or some
sort o( interest (( you are busy
in the daytime you will be willing
to come home in the evening to
your knitting or record collec
tion."
She [eels i( a husband wants his
wife's company on out-of-town
trips. It's fine for the spouse to
tag along. But if he doesn't ?
that's the end of the argument.
To keep busy Mrs. Monroe mana
ges a 10 room house near Boston,
two daughters and a 40 acre restau
rant.
The tall brunette said she didn't
know if she could be happy with a
normal, quiet and slow-paced life
Her duties at The Meadows, a
Boston showplace - restaurant she
has run for the last year, include:
checking (lnances, buying food and
supplies, planning of menus and
special events, and advertising.
Mrs. Monroe, 42, has a master's
degree In business but admits she
had two strikes against her when
she took over as the restaurant's
director ? she was a woman and
?the owner's wife. But now, she
says:
"1 think I've proven I know a
little about the business. It took
until last month, but now I have
the confidence of the organiza
tion."
Since she tackled The Meadows,
Mrs. Monroe has changed both the
content and format of the menus
to please the women diners, and
trotted out ponies, pony carts and
loilypops for the junior patrons.
She feels strongly that children
in a show business family should
not suffer from their parents activ
ities and insists that Candace, 12,
and Christina, 9, get proper school
ing and affection.
Cancjy and Christie would much
prefer their father was a business
man who came home' every night.
Marines Plan
Annual Reunion
Camp Lejeune ? Personnel at
New York's Hotel Astor are brac
ing themselves for a Marine in
vasion this summer. A couple
thousand 1st Marine Division vet
erans have picked the Astor as the
site of their seventh annual re
union Aug. 6-8.
The veterans of Guadalcanal,
Gloucester, Peleliu and Okinawa
really threw a ball at the Astor in
11149. But the '54 bit, with
World War II forces augmented
bjr 1st Division veterans of Korea,
promises to make the '49 show
seem like a meeting of a sowing
Circle.
Hundreds of Lejeune marines
who served with the 1st Marine
Division are expected to lead the
assault.
While fun and the renewal of
old acquaintances are some of the
prime aims of the reunion, there
will also be a serious side. A
memorial service, honoring the di
vision's dead, is planned. And the
btisiness meeting will have on its
agenda the scholarship fund, for
the dependents of Division ma
rines killed in action.
The traditional banquet and ball
slated Aug. 7, wHI again be the
reunion high point, according to
Herb McCallen, reunion chairman.
