Smyrna-HI Tops Morehead
4-0; Drops Opener 10-6
Red Davis of Smyrna-Harkers Island became the first
pitcher in the County Baseball loop to hurl a no-hit, no-run
fame Sunday, twirling a 4-0 decision over Morehead City
in the second game of a doubleheader. Morehead City took
the first game 10-6.
In performing his feat, Davis allowed only two men,
Bobby Martin and Lloyd Culpep-'
per, to reach base via walks. Mar
tin walked in the first and got
around to third. Culpepper drew
his pass in the fourth and made it
to second.
The game was a five-inning con
test, although two-thirds of the
sixth inning was played before be
ing halted by rain. Since it was
not a complete inning the score
and records reverted to the last
completed inning, which in this
case was the fifth.
Rain Halts Game
In the top of the sixth Morehead
had scored three runs on three er
rors and a hit by Charles Freeman.
At the start of the bottom of the
sixth rain began to fall.
Morehead got two Smyrna-Mar
kers Island batters out in the bot
tom of the sixth before rain start
ed pelting down in sheets. Um
pires at this point halted the game.
The split gave Smyrna-Harkers
Island an 8-8 record and sole pos
session of fourth place in the
County League. Morehead still
clings to fifth place with a 7-8 tab.
In the second game the hosts
jumped to a three-run lead in the
first as Norris Hill and Gaskill
spanked singles off Lefty Adcock,
making his first appearance on the
mound for the losers.
Davis Comes Through
Gaskill's single scored Hill with
the first marker and J. D. Lewis
drove him in when Kemp Wickizer
booted Lewis' wicked hopper down
the first base line. Lewis came
home on Wilson Davis' clutch sin
gle to left center.
Smyrna-Harkers Island posted its
final tally in the third after two
outs. Lewis led off with a pass
and scored on Curvis Hamilton's
safety to right center.
Wilson Davis fanned to end the
inning. He and Gaskill paced the
four-hit attack on Adcock with one
for two.
Morehead put the first game on
ice in the fourth inning, scoring
six runs on three hits, two walks,
and a fielder's choicc. The inning
was highlighted by Jim Willis'
lead off triple and Bobby MarUn's
double.
Morehead grabbed three runs off
Wilson Davis in the second inning
when Bob Butler doubled to score
Freeman and J. Willis, on base by
a walk and a hit batsman. Butler,
scored on Wickizer's sacrifice fly
to center field.
Larkee Doubles
The final tally came in the sixth
when Norm Larkee led off with a
double, took third on Gaskill's er
ror, and scored on Freeman's dou
ble.
Wilson Davis tripled in two runs
in Smyrna-Harkers Island second
inning to trail 3-2. They went into
the lead, 6-3, in the third, scoring
four runs on three hits, two er
rors, and a sacrifice fly. Gaskill
poled a double during the rally.
Morehead touched Red and Wil
son Davis for seven hits paced by
Brad Mcintosh's one for two. Wil
son Davis led the six-hit attack on
Culpepper, winning pitcher, with
two for three.

R. A. Davis, Morehead,
Makes Fish Rods to Order
By DON WILDER 4
R. A. "Tops'l" Davis claims to
be the only "tailor" of fishing rods
in this area.
Mr. Davis has recently opened in
Morehead City a shop, "Topsail,"
in which he will make fishing rods
to suit individual tastes. The shop
is located on Shepard Street near
the hospital.
He will take orders from individ
uals for fishing rods and then
fashion the rods according to the
person's needs and the type of fish
ing the person intends to do.
He explains that each individual
should have a special type rod for
each kind of fishing. He said that
with proper rods a person can
enjoy fishing more and will be fish
ing more from the sportsman's an
gle.
However, he admits that most
folks can't afford a complete set of
rods for different types of fishing,
so he has to make mostly all-pur
pose rod.s
Mr. Davis is a booster of sports
fishing and thinks there should be
more fishing of this type in this
area.
He continued, "Most people ar#
merely concerned with getting the
fish in the boat or on the bank.
They don't think about the thrill
that comes in matching wits with
the fish and playing it out for all
it's worth."
"If a person will tell me what
type of fishing he or she intends
to do I can make a rod for that
type of fishing which will allow the
individual to get the most out of
fishing. I can also offer the indi
vidual some tips on sport-fishing,
if my advice is wanted," he. added.
Mr. Davis is a man with a faith
in the future of this area.
The 52-year-old ex-yacht captain
says he is an ex-Bostonian and, by
choice, an adopted North Caro
linian.
Several years ago he decided he
wanted to settle down and "grow
some roots," but, as he says, "you
can't grow roots on a ship."
In explaining how he decided on
Morehead City as a location for
his business he said, "I made a
thorough study of all the towns on
the Atlantic coast. I was impress
ed by the Morehead City 'boom.'
I had studied population increases,
bank deposit increases, new busi
nesses, locations, prices and the
need for a business sjch as mine.
Everything pointed to Morehead
City. It's a city with a future."
He said he based his study on
the growth since 1051, which he
considers to be the first of the re
cent "stable years."
Since he has been here, Mr. Davis
haa suggested a Morehead City
