at Atlantic.
Funeral services will be held at
2 o'clock this afternoon in the
Primitive Baptist Church, Atlantic,
with the Elder R. B. Gray and El
der Gurganus officiating. Burial
will be in the community cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters.

Funeral services for Thomas
Murray Thomas Jr., 70, who died at 1
his home. 215 Front St., Beaufort,
Thursday morning after a long ill
ness were held at 3 o'clock Satur
day afternoon in Ann Street Meth
odist Church, with the Rev. J. D.
Young, pastor of the church, offi
ciating. Burial was in Ocean View
Cemetery.
Mr. Thomas, who had served as
sheriff of the county, deputy
sheriff, town clerk, and assistant
ABC officer, is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Charles Cheek of
Beaufort, Mrs. C. R. Swearingen of
Smithfield; two sisters, Mrs. C. S.
Maxwell. Miss Laura Thomas, both
of Beaufort: and three brothers,
Jerry of Suffolk, Charles and
Phillip, both of Beaufort.
Pallbearers were Mr. Thomas's
nephews, Ralph Thomas, Phillip
Neal Thomas Jr., Bill Murray
Thomas, Leon King Thomas.
George Murray Thomas Jr. and
Alonzo Thomas. Honorary pall
bearers were the peace officers,

If sufficient interest is shown on
the pert of 4-H Club members, a
State Band will be organized dur
ing 4-H Week Maj. C. D. Kuts
chinsti, Director of State College
Band, has agreed to give a special
course of instruction during the
week. If this is carried through,
a special concert will be given on
Friday night of 4-H Club Week.
Any 4-H Club member inter
ested in participating in this band,
should contact the home agent's
office at once, since it will be ne
cessary to send in an application
form, in order to participate. Club
members who are in high school
bands might participate, if their
applications are accepted.
The 4-H district eliminations con
test it Washington, N. C., will
take place Thursday and not today
as stated in last Tuesday's NEWS
TIMES. Ten boys and girls from
Carteret will participate.
The annual 4-H Club Week, com
monly called 4-H Short Course,
will be held at State College in
Raleigh, July 19-24. During this
week approximately 1,000 of the
top 4-H Club members from 100
counties in North Carolina will
gather on the State College cam
pus for a week of instruction, in
spiration and fun.
While in Kaleigh the 4-H mem
bers will live in the college dormi
tories. Most of the meetings will
be in the giant William Neal Rey
nolds Coliseum, a building on the
campus that can accommodate 12,
500 f>eople for a basketball game.
During the mornings there will
be classes on things of interest to
4-H members. One of the classes
this year will be "It's Nice to Know
How." This class will be on man
ners and how to act in public
places. Also the finals of the
various 4-H contests will be held.
Demonstrations on vegetable pro
duction, livestock, conservation,
electricity, public speaking and
several others will be given.
On Wednesday night the State
Health Pageant will be held with
the county health kings and queens
from all over North Carolina par
ticipating. Then the state dress
revue will be presented Thursday
night with beautiful dresses made
by the 4-H girls and modeled by
the girls that made the dresses.
Tours to the Governor's Mansion
and State Capitol also will be
made. Swimming, dancing, and
other types of recreation will be
planned for everyone to partici
pate in throughout the week.
Bill Turpin of Broad Creek is
the County Health King who will
participate in the State Health Pa
geant. Hi* brother. David, will
act as a delegate from the Camp
Glenn Junior 4-H Club.
