The railroads, vitally interested in McLean's proposal to ferry trucks from Wilpungton north Court Receipts Total $19,905 Beaufort's Recorder's court has taken in $18,905.17 during the past 18 months, according to figures released by Dan Walker, Beaufort town clerk, at the meeting of Beau fort's Town Board Monday night. The court paid out $18,077.05, leaving a balance of $828.12. The largest item on the record is $5,619.15 which was paid out in bond refunds, forfeitures and fines Salaries for clerks, the judge and the solicitor totaled $6,358.75 while jail fees, board and mainten ance for prisoners was $3,752.95. Money for the State Officer's Re tirement Fund was $1,176. Mr. and Mrs. Garland Lockey and daughter, Carol, of Jackson. Miss., arrived last Friday to visit her mother, Mrs. Sue Willis, his father, Mr. Charlie Lockey and other relatives. Mrs. Dora Bell celebrated her 74th birthday at home Sunday with all of her children present. Mrs. P. P. Garner celebrated her 86th birthday Sunday with a picnic dinner at her home. Her six chil dren and several grandchildren and great grandchildren were pres ent. Moon Circle MeeU Mrs. A. R. Craig -was hostess to the Lottie Moon Circle of the Wo man'* Missionary Society of the Newport Hissionary Baptist Church at her home Monday night. Mrs. J. 0. Webb gave the de votional and Mrs. D. B. Cum mins, Mrs. Ned Ratliff, Mrs. Craig, Mrs. Ruby Roland and Miss Louise Tolson took part on the program, "Seedtime in the Philippines." Mi j Craig, chairman, presided over the business session. There was a discussion about the circle sponsoring the girls' auxiliary, which is a mission branch of junior girls. It was thought to be a good project but no definite plans were made. * Mrs. Cummins asked the circle to meet with her in August. The hostess served strawberry short cake at the end of the meeting. WMS Circle Meets Mrs. Emma Wiggs was welcomed as a new member when Circle No 1 of the WMC met Monday night at the home of Mrs. Jack Bell. "Seedtime in the Philippines," was the topic of the program and those takiiu P?rt were Mrs. Ram sey, Mrs. Sam Pollard, Mrs. El sie Miller, Mrs. Bill Jefferion, Mrs. Bruce Gerock, and Mrs. M. J. Mitchell. Mrs. Bell gave the devotional. Mrs. Mitchell, chairman, was in charge of the meeting. Mrs. L. C. Carroll asked the circle to meet with her next month with Mr*. Wiggs to serve as co-ho*tess. The meeting will be August 2nd at 7:30 p.m. The circle member accepted the responsibility for organiiing the Sunbeams in the church and Mr*. Pollard was appointed to serve a* leader for the group of children. Limeade and cookles were served by the hostess at the close of the meeting. Mr*. Railroad representatives told the ICC that the McLean ferry plan would have far-reaching, undesir able financial effects on the rail roads. J. G. Hiddleton, general freight agent of Atlantic Coast Line, of Wilmington, tqld the ICC the rail roads are an essential part of the national economy and that they must maintain present equipment and personnel to meet fluctuating demands. Pointing to the essential part rail roads play in times of emergency, Middleton said that since the war there has been a trend by shippers to use trucks. He said the sea-land shipment plan couid increase that trend and injure further the rail roads so far as freight volume is concerned, at a time when they might well be called on to meet a national emergency. Mercury Registers 80; Winds Blow Briskly Wednesday The mercury took a dip into the 80's following last weekend's down pour of rain, but rose to 88 Wed nesday, according to Stamey Davis, weather observer. Following the rain, the wind shifted to the northeast Monday and blew from there the greater part of Tuesday. Late Tuesday the wind shifted to the southwest and continued to blow briskly from that direction Wednesday. Mr. Davis said these winds of high velocity were out of season for this area. Howard Circle The Gertie Howard Circle of the' WSCS met Tuesday night at the home of Mrs. S. D. Edwards. The devotional, "Jesus Christ? the Way," was given by Mrs. Stan ley Mann. Mrs. D. I. Garner, chairman, presided over the abort business session. The hostess served angel food cake with ice cream. The meet ing was ended with the spiritual life program by Mrs. Edwards.
