While tome of theie ayitems have been in existence for a* long as 18 years, many people still do not really know just what we are. There is no mystery about us, or about any of the rural electric systems. Our electric system is busi ness, like the drug store or the feed store. Only in stead of selling drugs or feed, it distributes and sells electricity. There are two differences between our operation and that of most other businesses. First, every one of our member-consumers is also an owner of the system. Second, and most important, our business is not conducted for profit. Some people have not understood this non-profit angle. Really, it's very simple. Every person who buys electricity from this system is an owner of the sys tem- Consequently, the rate he pays for his elec tricity does not include a margin for profit, since that would be taking money out of one pocket and putting it in another. It's exactly like the druggist selling himself a bottle of aspirin. He doesn't pay himself the retail price, which includes his profit. He pays only what it cost him to get the bottle of aspirin into his "store. So, the member-owners of this system pay for their electricity only what it costs them to buy it at whole sale and distribute it to themselves. That is the sole purpose of this system ? to provide Its members with electricity at coet. It's not much of a mystery when you know what it is. CARTERET -CRAVEN ELECTRIC MEMBERSHIP CORP.
