Seadogs Crush New Bern
JV, 38-0; Pittman Stars

Beaufort football coach Hugh
Gordon unleashed his pack of 1954
Seadogs Thursday night and they
swarmed over New Bern's JVs,
384), before an estimated 950 spec
tators who sat in intermittent
showers.
The Beaufort squad displayed a
well-rounded offensive machine
which was sparked by the hip
swinging running of Murray Pitt
man and pass-catching of Gehr
mann Holland
Beaufort took control of the
game early in the first quarter
when Harold Willis electrified the
crowd with a blazing 70-yard touch
down sprint.
The New Bern attack was bot
tled up most of the night by the
defensive play of Holland, Pitt
man, and tackles Alex Copeland
and Ed Willis.
The only serious Bear threat
came late in the third quarter and
was halted when Ed Willis inter
cepted a lateral on the Beaufort 6
yard line.
Pass Pays Off
Beaufort garnered their second
score of the night in the second
quarter on a 21-yard pass from
Pittman to Holland.
A few minutes later, the pulsat
ing Pittman zig zagged his way 45
yards to the third Seadog tally on
a punt return.
Coach Gordon sent in a complete
ly new team late in the second
quarter. The squad took over on
their own 18 and thrilled the crowd
with a 72-yard drive which was
capped by a 40-yard dash by Jim-<
mie Norris as the half ended.
At half time Beaufort held a 19-0,
margin.
The Seadogs were stymied in the
third quarter but started moving
again in the final period.

Pittman threw * 4-ywd past to
Holland for a Kore making it 23-0.
The second platoon came in
again and Pee wee Parkins sparked
a 15-yard drive and bulled over on
a quarterback sneak, bringing the
score to 32-0.
Fumble Grabbed
After the kickoff, the Bears ran
three plays and Whisnot faded
back to pass on the Beaufort 30.
He was rushed and hit hard. He
fumbled and Seadog tackle Alex
Copeland brought the crowd to
their feet as he picked up the fum
ble and lumbered 60 yards to a
touchdown.
The game ended with Beaufort
on New Bern's 40-yard line, hold
ing a 38-0 victory in their season's
opener.
Play-by-play:
First quarter ? Beaufort won the
toss and elected to receive. Jerry
Willis took the opening kickoff and
ran it back 20 yards to the Beau
fort 40. Harold Willis picked up
5 yards up the middle and Pittman
was thrown for a 2-yard loss. A
5-yard penalty for offsides was in
flicted against Beaufort. Quarter
back Harold Mason gained a yard
around end and Pittman dropped
back to punt.
Pittman's punt carried 30 yards
to New Bern's John Hogan who
was hit immediately by Holland on
the Bear 30.
Huggins got 4 yards over center
and Lewis was dropped for a 1-yard
loss. Bear fullback Whisnot was
stopped at the line of scrimmage
and Hogan punted with the ball
rolling dead on the Beaufort 30
yard line.
H. Willis Scares
Hopping Harry Willis hit off the
right side of the line, spun off the
linebacker, outran the Bear safety
man, and galloped 70 yards to the
night's first touchdown. Gehrmann
Holland split the uprights as he
kicked the extra point, giving the
Seadogs an early 7-0 lead.
Holland kicked off for Beaufort
and Huggins gathered it in and
went to the New Bern 35. Holland
stopped Lewis on a pitchout and
Owings dropped Whisnot for no
gain. Bear quarterback John Ho
gan tossed a jump pass to Lamb
for four. Hogan fell back to punt.
Mason took in the punt on the
25 and powered to the 30. Pittman
picked up 5 and 3 yards on two line
plunges. He gained one on third

Beaufort punted but a penalty
gave them a first down on the SO.
H. Willis slammed to a 3-yard gain
in the line and Pittman was
thrown for a 2-yard loss.
Beaufort Fumbles
Beaufort fumbled and Huggins
recovered on the Beaufort 46. On
the following play Pittman recover
ed a Bear fumble at the same spot.

Tomorrow as 54 Qualify
New Bern Club
Sponsors Cruise
The ' Eastern Carolina Yacht
Club, New Bern, is sponsoring a
small boat cruise Saturday and
Sunday which will start in New
Bern at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and
will end in New Bern Sunday.
All owners of boats 21 feet long
and under, both inboard or out
board, are invited to enter the
cruise.
After leaving New Bern the
cruise will have a rendezvous at
Minnesott Beach for refreshments
and regrouping. Another rendez
vous is set for Core Creek Bridge
in the intracoastal waterway.
After the meeting at the Core
Creek Bridge, the group will
cruise to Morehead City Yacht
Basin, arriving about 5 p.m.
Sunday the fleet will move to
Beaufort and Harkers Island be
fore starting the return journey to
New Bern.

Pittman Thrills Crowd *?
Murray Pittman took the punt,
juggled it once and set sail up the
sideline near the Beaufort bench.
He twisted loose from the eager
hands of three New Bern players,
reversed his field completely and
went over into the end zone stand
ing up after a 45-yard jaunt. Hol
land's extra point try was no good.
Beaufort led, 19-0.
Three New Bern plays netted 7
yards and Hogan punted to Seadog

Jamie Norris picked up 3 yards
up the middle and then smashed
for a 7-yard gain and a first down.
Peewee Parkins, quarterback, bull
ed 7 yards on a sneak and Norris
got a first down. Norris slipped

the Seadogs leading, 19-0.
Third quarter ? New Bern
couldn't move the ball and Beau

a punt. Pittman took 4 and Jerry
Willis 1. Pittman's pass to Holland
on fourth down was incomplete
and the Bears took over on Beau
fort's 22. Davia and Hogan moved
the ball to the Beaufort 6. The
drive was stopped by Seadog end
Ed Willi* as he intercepted a
lateral.
Pittman took a pitchout on the
15 and went to the 45 after H. Wil
lis gained. 4 yards and the Bears
were penalized 5 yards for delay
of the game.
Holland went up in a group to
bring down a pass for a 5-yarder
and Harold Willis split the middle
for 7 more yards.
Jerry Willis slammed for 2 yards
and Harold Willis pushed to a first
down on the New Bern 45 as the

Temple Tucker, a much sought
schoolboy basketball player.
Tucker is 6-feet-lOft , weighs 200
and is still growing. By the time
he's ready for varsity basketball
at Rice he may be seven feet.
Temple, who played for Bowie
in four Texas high school tourna
ments and made all-State three
years, chose Rice at the end of the
last season but had a provision.
"I'm going to work down there
this summer and if my asthma
bothers me I'm going to Southern
Methodist," he said.
He announced that since his
asthma didn't bother him he was
going to definitely enter Rice. "I
guess I've ont^rown it," he explain
ed.
So Temple spent the rest of the
summer wrestling cases of soft
drinks five days a week, life guard
ing on weekends and playing bas
ketball in his spare time. He fig
ures the work strengthened him.
Tucker was pretty convincing
when he played in an all-star game
at Murray, Ky. He was in the
game only part of the second quar
ter and practically none of the
fourth but scored 26 points.
As a sophomore in high school
he averaged 20 points per game.
As a junior he averaged 26 and as
a senior 30.1.
Guthrie Boats
Take Sailfish
Two of Lcroy Guthrie's party
fishing boats boated sailfish Thurs
day with each of the fiah measur
ing over 7 feet apiece.
The two boata, Gulf Breeze and
Southwind, were fishing near each
other in the vicinity of the radio
bouy about 29 miles offshore when
the sail fish were hooked, accord
ing to Mr. Guthrie.
The Gulf Breeze was carrying a
party from Lynchburg, Va., and a
party of jet pilots from Cherry
Point were aboard the Southwind.
The two parties also caught
about 20 amberjack apiece. The
amberjack webbed between 20 and
39 pounds.

in their first outing of the '54 grid
season.
The Eagles sailed to several long
runs during the night with Kemp
Wickizer, Norman Larkee and Dan
ny O'Neal being the top "get away"
boys. Co-captain Bobby Willis
proved to be a masterful quarter
back with running and passing in
cluded in his versatility.
The rain which peppered down
at intervals failed to dampen the
enthusiasm of approximately 1,400
spectators and the Morehead City
team.
Larkee Dashes 40 Yards
Norman Larkee, 150 pounds of
speed and sprinting ability, shot
the Eagles out to an early lead in
the first quarter with a 40-yard scat
into paydirt on the first series of
downs in which Morehead City had
handled the ball.
On the following kickoff Swans
boro's Millard Johnson got off the
visitors' longest run as he started
on his own 15 and, following good
blocking, moved up the sidelines to
the Morehead City 40.
Bobby Willis pushed over the
Eagle's second tally on a quarter
back keep play from the 10.

ny O'Neal brought the score to 21-0
in the second quarter with a zig
zagging 30 yard touchdown excur
sion.
Willis Snags Pass
The scoring for the night was
ended in the third quarter as Jim
mie Willis, Eagle end, got behind
the Swansboro safety and brought
in a 36-yard pass without break
ing stride and crossed standing up
making it 28-0.
The Eagle's second team played
most of the fourth quarter. The
second stringers threatened late in
the game as Jimmy Parker hit Wal
ter Willis with a pass on the 6
yard line. On the following play a I
fumble was recovered by Swans
boro as the game ended with More
head City holding a 28-0 victory in
their first game of the young sea
son.

got loose from two tacklers and
followed several good blocks up the
sidelines and appeared to be on his
way until he was headed off by
Bobby Willis on the Morehead City
40 ? yard line.
Bill Kay got a 1-yardcr and quar
terback Jay Cardy dropped back
to pass. Larkee intercepted on the
30 and ran it back to the 44.
Ken Brown hit the line for 1
yard and Bobby Willis marked off
8 yards on the keep play. On a
quarterback sneak, Willis pushed
to five yards and a first down.
The Eagles shifted to the single
wing and Wickiter was thrown for
a yard loss by tackle Jimmy Tyn
dall. A jump pass was incomplete
and O'Neal couldn't gain on a
pitchout.
Swansboro took over and Ward
waltzed 7 yards before he was
stopped by Larkee. Walter Willis
stopped Johnson for no gain and
Swansboro punted on third down.

45.

nicknamed "Baby," bulled and
stiff-armed his way to the 10 yard
line. Bobby Willis faked a hand
off and went around end on a keep
play. Running like a man who was
not be denied, Willis, hit twice,
pushed off and finally pulled three
men across the goal line bringing
the score to 134. Wickiier plunged
to the extra point, 14-0.
Second Quarter ? Wickiier stop
ped Privette on the 30 with a hard
tackle on the kickoff. Johnson lost
a yard and Buddy Midgett stopped
Ward. Swansboro again punted on
third down.
Larkee got it on the 25 and
moved to the 32.
Connor made 8 yards on a spin
ner play up the middle, O'Neal
picked up the first down on a 4
ysrder and then lost 4 around end.
Bobby WilUa ran the option play
and decided to keep. He swivel-hip
ped his way 20 yarda to the 40.

for an 8 yard loss attempting to
pass. Larkee was stopped for no
gain and Swansboro took over on
their own 37.
David Privette was stopped for a
1-yard loss and Jay Cardy gained a

for a first down. Larkee twisted
his way to the 19. Johnson inter
cepted a pass and ran to the 15.

the punt and was dropped hard by
