Holland Emeritus Civic Club Promotes State Park Promiting t ho development of Fort Macon State Park, a project of the Emeritus Civic Club, was carried forward this week with a letter from the club president, W S. Kidd, to Ben Douglas, director of the Department of Conservation and Development. The letter follows: Emeritus Civic Club Morehead City. N. C. Dear Sir: We wish to call to your atten tion certain improvements and ad ditions to Fort Macon State I'ark which we feel could be made at very little expense, thereby en hancing its value from an educa tional and recreational standpoint and to the pleasure and comfort of its many visitors. As you no doubt know, the State has already provided a large and rather costly structure on top of a large sand dune with tables, benches, and a large fire place. It is a well built open pavilion, de lightfully located to view the ocean, Bogue Sound, Beaufort, Morehead City, and on clear days, Cape Lpokout lighthouse. However, for the want of a short paved road and parking lot. the pavilion is just about useless- being unaccessible to families with small children and older folks who are unable to climb the steep sand dune, especially when carrying a lunch basket. Would it not be possible to build a short, substantial road and ample parking space at very little cost in order to make available the present structure which was built at con siderable cost? ur/...|j it ??? aI>.a Ka n/uoikln in nuuiu ll liui disu uc (JOsaiuic IU build one or two solid walkways from the present parking lot out to the boardwalk and beach where the same condition prevails, only not so severe and impossible as de scribed in the above paragraph? This is the only state park on the North Carolina sea coast, and so far as we can recall, it is the first sea coast state park south of Jones Beach. New York. We have been informed that it has far more visitors and is enjoyed by far more people than any other park in any part of the state. If this is correct, would it not be a good investment to build a longer boardwalk with more shelters equipped with com fortable benches where one could sit and enjoy the ocean, the surf, and the cool breeze, especially those not physically able to trudge through the sand and sit out on the beach in the glare of the sun? For those interested in history and architecture, the state has lit tle to offer that surpasses Fort Ma con. It is an architectural gem. For that reason we strongly recom mend the appropriation of the com paratively small amount necessary for its complete restoration. Fort Macon State Park has everything: history, architecture, scenery, a beautiful beach for bathing and surf fishing, and a delightful cli mate. It is an unexcelled natural setting without the benefit of neon lights, juke boxes and honky tonks. It is clean, orderly and well man aged. Why not give Fort Macon State Park a break and appropriate the relatively small amount necessary for all the people who enjoy his tory, art, and ' healthful seashore recreation, and a park of which North Carolina could justly be proud. The number visiting this park annually, even under adverse circumstances, tells the story. Respectively yours, W. S. Kidd Highway Patrol Seeks Applicants Raleigh ? Oct. 9. with a fish fry at the Swansboro School cafeteria. Among the guests will be John D. Larkins, chairman of the State Democratic Committee. Sen. Alton Lennon. Wilmington. Judge Henry Stevens, Warsaw; and Judge Henry Grady, New Bern. Mayor M. N. Lisk said that Sen ator-elect Kerr Scott had been in vited but will be unable to attend. "Had he been able to come," the mayor said, "we were going to have a political communion,' in other words kiss and make up, but since he can't be hers, we just won't be able to do it," he laughed. Chairman Larkins will preside. Short speeches are scheduled with Mayor Lisk making several intro ductory remarks. The unique part about the Mullet 'Whiskers' Measure Safe Railroad Clearances Sacramento, Calif. (AP) ? The Southern Pacific Railroad uses "cat whiskers" to determine safe clear ances for loaded freight cars in tun nels and on bridges of its Sierra Nevada line. A special car is equipped with 126 steel-tipped aluminum feelers extending from the top and sides. They operate something like the whiskers of cats walking in the dark. When the feelers touch an ob struction, they transmit the dis tance to dials inside the car, where crewmen record them. Festival is the way the food is go ing to be gathered. Black Beard and five pirates will be sailing Swansboro waters and vicinity all day Saturday, Oct. 9, and fishing vessels will be stopped and ordered ot give up some of their cargo for the feed that night. "When the fishermen learn what it's for, I don't think they'll resist/* the mayor chuckled. If dignitaries arrive early enough that day, they will be taken for a boat ride.
