Expectant Mother Guides Road Machine to Safety Indianapolis (AP) ? Workmen left a street sweeper standing on a street in surburban Lawrence be cause they couldn't start it. But along came 7-year-old William Decker and he had no trouble. The big machine rumbled to ward a group of playing children and young Decker fell off, frac turing his jaw and nose. Mrs. Norma Lavely. 27, jumped aboard and steered the machine away from the children. A man jumped on and stopped the engine. And Mrs. Lavely was expecting a baby in three weeks. (AP)~ Doing con struction work may be a man-sized job but Mrs. Gladys Brown man ages to hold her own at it. Mrs. Brown was the only fe male member of a construction company crew handling a pipeline laying Job here. The sunbonneted "workman" is the wife of James Brown, a super intendent for the company. To keep up with fellow workers and assist her husband, she does such tasks as laying bricks, sand ing, running assorted machines and driving trucks. "I love it," she says. "It's in my blood." Conservationists Rescue Island During Storm Bolton, Conn. (AP) ? The Con necticut Fish and Game Depart ment says that capturing an Itein ennt island was its strangest as signment. It happened during ^ heavy storm whan the Island in Bolton Lakes broke loose. As it bumped along the shore, it destroyed boats and knocked down docks. Conser vation officers finally used out board motorboats to shove the Is land against the shore. There it was moored with heavy ropes. The island measured 125 feet long, 75 feet wide and six feet deep. It con sisted of a mass of tangled vegeta tion. some small trees and a thick growth of brush. Red Cross Takes Applications For Assistance The Red Cross started Jaking ap i plications for aid Saturday after noon. Frank Hollowed. Red Cross representative from (ioldsboro. said applications will be accepted at the sheriff's office at the court house in Beaufort and the munici pal building in Morchead City. Financial aid is given by the Red Cross on the basis of need and not loss, Mr. Hollowed explains. The funds go to victims who have no other resources to help them sur vive the disaster. Mr. Hollowed arrived here at 7 o'clock Thursday night and made arrangements with Mayor George W. Dill to use the munici pal building as a shelter. Dr. Lawrence Rudder. Beaufort, disaster chairman for the county, made arrangements to use the courthouse as a shelter in Beaufort Approximately 20 persons found refuge in the courthouse Thursday night and between 65 and 75 were in the town hall in Morehead City. On Friday the number of refu gees swelled. . The Red Cross served sandwiches, coffee and to I the babies, milk. Motorist's Horn Attracts 'Friendly' Greetings Catlettsburg, Ky. (AP) ? Hi Walker drove his automoble through town with the horn blow ing continuously. Pedestrians shouted and waved, trying to get him to turn the thing off. He waved back and drove on. Finally he parked the machine, the horn still blaring. Then a pe destrian walked up and handed him a note. Walker quickly raised the hood, jerked a wire, and peace was restored. He is deaf. Plane Tracks Horses Butte, Mont. (AP) ? Deerlodge National Forest rangers found the going too rough when they tried to round up stray horses on forest land so they hired an airplane to spot the animals. Fei ?2J^ianOf MhAUeSaUve Carteret Gets 15.4 Miles Road Paved Last Month Miles of road resurfaced or paved in the county during Sep tember Mere 15.04. according to a report from the State Highway and Public Works Commission. Total of miles paved in the entire second district of which Carteret is a part was U2.#2 miles. Other counties in the second di vision are lieaufort, Craven, tireene, Jones, l*enoir, Pamlico and PMt. In this county the road from Merrimon, running east to South River and from Merrimon running westward was payed. Eighteen feet wide, it runs five miles. The- road from the junction of C S. 70 and N.C. 24 was widened and resurfaced with sand asphalt for 5.27 miles west to near New port. The newly paved road is 24 feet wide. Arendell Street extended was surfaced for 2.06 miles west in Morehead City. The road is 24 feet We. Twenty fourth Street between Arendell and ihe bridge was wid ened from 40 to 44 feet to the curb and - surfaced with sand asphalt for 0.11 mile. Two other Carteret roads were widened and resurfaced with sand asphalt, their lengths: on U.S. 70 from N.C. 24. east 2.15 miles; and from U.S. 70 to a point near the radio station. 0.45 mile The first improvement has a 24-foot wide surface, the second is 20 feet wide. Now all but 30 have been broken up or converted to motorships ? and those 30 are dwindling every week. The shipping men have set up three committees.
