Farmers Turn To Aromatic Leaf A number of North Carotin* farmers are learning that they can produce a high-quality aromatic (Turkish) tobacco without years of experience, according to R. H. Crouse, extension tobacco specia list. M. W. Anderson of route t Lex ington. and S. B. Severs of route I Linwood, became the first Da vidson County fanners to pro duce aromatic tobacco this 'year. They were able to produce a high quality product without previous experience in growing aromatic tobacco. Neither had ever seen a crop of this type before producing their own crops. Vaude Hartsell of route 2 Stan field, in Stanly County produced his first crop of aromatic tobac co in 1950 Since that year he has increased his arcreage ? well as quality, although all of his crops have been of very good quality. He started with less than one-half acre and produced over 2tt acres this year Mr. Hartsell was able to increase bis acreage by adopting improved labor-saving method* of harvesting and by I natal ling a curing sys tem recommended by State Col lege. On Us first sale this year, he sold 1,524 pounds of tobacco at an average of 97 cents per pound. Mr. C rouse said that all three farmers are el the opinion that many mere farmers to this state will be giving aromatic tabacco more serious consideration as another cash crop to fit into their farming operations.
