Areas Hit by Hurricane
By LT. WALTER P. WHITE
Camp Lejenne, N. C.? As Hurri

eastern North Carolina Friday
morning, Oct. 15, Camp Lejeune
Marines were the "first to give aid
to stricken areas.
In answer to an urgent appeal
by Mrs. C. T. Strickland city
manager of Carolina Beach, Maj.
Gen. Alfred H. Noble, command
ing general of Marine Corps Base,
dispatched 30 military policemen
and one officer at 9:45 a.m., Oct.
15, to act as security guards there.
The Marines guarded the evacu
ated stores and homes during the
hurricane until 6:30 p.m., when
they were relieved by National
Guard troops.
From his hospital bed, Gover
nor Umstead on Friday afternoon
telephoned General Noble to per
sonally thank him for his prompt
aid to the stricken town.
After the hurricane passed
northward, other Marine units and
equipment were dispatched to
nearby disaster areas. In addition,
off duty Marines gave their time
and material aid to civilians and
Marines made destitute by the
hurricane.
Four "DUKWs'' ? ? amphibian

across the Inland Waterway. Two
vehicles with fire fighting equip

A washed out bridge on High- '
way 70 about seven miles east of
Beaufort left approximately 10,000
people isolated in eastern Car
teret County and caused P. B.
Osgood, postal inspector at Beau
fort to ask for assistance.
In answer to his request, the
Second Marine Division dispatched
four "DUKWs" with crews, to
transport vitally needed food, sup
plies, equipment, and mail while
the bridge was being repaired by
the State Highway Department.
Responding to the Saturday
night, Oct. 16 call by Swansboro

Man Finds Folks
Are Skeptical
Boone, Bf. C. (AP)? It's not easy
to give away money. At least that's
the conclusion of J. B. Johnson,
who like! to study hunrun psychol
ogy.
With 10 crisp one dollar bills,
Johnson recently stood on a street
corner here and offered money to
23 pedestrians. Only three people
accepted dollar bills.
"Truth of the matter Is humans
don't trust each other anymore."
Juhnson observed. For instance,
one woman told him. "Young man,
dont bother me, I'm not Interested
in your tricks." Another said
sharply, "Please, out of my way."
The experiment led Johnson to
this summation: "People work hard
(or money. Some steal it. Some
try to manufacture It. But few will
let you give it toHhem."
