The nickles of know-how pro
gram was approved by Carteret
County farmers Oct. 15.
One hundred and fifty-four farm
ers voted for the program while
nine were against it The referen
dum and the hurricane occurred
on the same day and for that rea
son voting was very light.
Farmers in the county will pay
a nickel assessment on every ton ,
of feed and fertilizer that they (

Driver Faces
Three Charges
John T. Wilton has been charged
with drunken driving, no operators
license, and failure to transfer car
registration within 20 days. Wilson
was involved in an automobile ac
cident at 4:15 p.m. Saturday on the
Hill Creek Road a hall mile from
the Highway 101 intersection.
According to State Highway Pa
trolman W. J. Smith, who investi
gated, Wilson ina 1939 Chevrolet
truck was headed east and ran in
to the rear of a pick-up truck
driven by Ira Tulpepper, route 2
Newport.
After striking the rear of the
pick-up, Wilson's truck ran in the
creek. No one was hurt, Wilson
merely got wet, the patrolman said.
There was no damage to the
pick-up.
Storm-Damaged Beaufort
Buildings Come Down
The buildings on Front Street,
Beaufort, formerly occupied by
Biggs Shoe Shop, The Griddle and
Beaufort Plumbling Supply Co., are
being torn down. Razing started
Monday.
The buildings, owned by F. R.
Bell, Beaufort, were severely dam
aged in the hurricane. Because of
fire laws, the buildings could not
be repaired. They covered approxi
mately 150 feet of waterfront just
west of Queen Street.
In charge of tearing them down
is Roy Ellison, Beaufort.
State Plans Distribution
Of Storm Disaster Funds
Raleigh (AP) ? State officials
and members of the state's Hurri
cane Disaster Committee met this
week to discuss setting up of mac
hinery for the allocation of state
and federal disaster funds.
The state has appropriated
(100,000 and President Eisenhower
has approved the allocation of
555,000 in federal funds to aid
several towns in the hurricane dis
aster area to restore essential fa
cilities such as water and sewer
systems.

County Wins Recognition
For Recent Campaign
Mrs. J. C. Harvell, Morehead
City, chairman of the Crippled
Children's Society in the county,
announced yesterday that the
county has received an award for
its outstanding showing in the
Crippled Children's campgain last
spring.
The award was made at the re
cent meeting in Greensboro. Win
ning counties were determined on
the basis of the manner in which
they conducted the campaign, pub
licity, and financial return in re
lation to county population.
Collected here last spring was
more than $900. Mrs. Harvell said.
