In answer to a question by Al bert lea. More head City fish <|faler, Mr. Prterseo said that the statistician* want the atwwnt of abrinv caught oa each trip by Uia trawlers and the total monthly eateh on all other food fish. He said that the two men col lecting these figures in this state wiH work out a method so that there will be aa little burden as possible oa the man from whom the statistics sre obtained. When Monroe Gaskill, Cedar Island, asked if each (Isherman : would have to keep a record, Mr. | Petersen said that if the fisherman sold his fish to a dealer, the figures would obtained from that dealer. Voluntary cooperation, on the part of the men handling the fish at shore points, waa emphasized. Un less every dealer provides the necessary figures, the record will ' be of little value, Mr. Petersen ssi<). s i He stressed the fact that the fig ures are not used for taxation pur- 1 poses. There ia a law imposing a ' $10,000 fine on any statistician who supplies the figures to, anyone oftier than fish and wildlife em ployees entitled to th*Qi. Clayton Fulcher, dealer from At lantic, pledged his support of the program. Mr. Hutaff, a dealer irom Wil mington, said a fish marketing cen ter upstate would be of value. He said he hoped the day would come when North Carolina fishermen woukfet have to see their products shipped north ?nd have to Mke whatever they could get (or them. He added that he e<*Mp1 ?n their I Ml from North Car?UM fiahermen. Mr. Petersen told him that the bis buyers of fish do aot kaow what North Caroliaa has available because the amount and kind ol flah taken on thai coast has aevet been given them in published form. He also said that the fish haa to be supplied in a way that the arm ed forces can most easily use it. When s buyer knows of a source ?f fish food, he can go to the supplier and t?ll him how he wpuld like it packaged, but until the buyer ex presses interest, no approach can be made toward pleasing him in the packaging. "When you can sup ply the f&h the way he wants it, then you can sell tt," Mr. Petersen ?aid. John Seitter, Moi ahead City, ssked why it was neceuary to keep a record of the shrimp caught on each trip if all the shrimp are be ing caught in one are*. Mr. Peter sen said that it could be deter mined by those figures how much tffort was put forth to get a given ?mount of shrimp. He pointed out that there's a big difference to be noted in the avail ability of shrimp if it takes 20 boats to bring in 500 pounds or 50 boats to bring in the same amount. Representative Comments D. G. Bell, legislator from Car teret County, commented that fish ermen are interested, simply, in getting more money for their catch. He said it is impossible to bring capita] to the coast for investment in a canning or packaging plant unless the people with capital can be shown that it would be profit able to operate here. They cannot be shown when there are no figures available, and as long as those investors stay away, the fisherman stands no chance of getting mor?, money for his catch, Mr. Bell said.
