Stowaway Wife of Seaman Kept Under Constant Guard Neither Danish Seaman Helga 1 Guntxel or hi* 23 year-old wile, Grete, will ael fool on American ?oil this trip. Mrs. Guntiel was dis covered as a stowaway aboard the MS Aabjourn which loaded with tobaeee at Morehead City over the weekend. Her husband is a member of the crew. The ship sailed for Wilmington Sunday and Mr*. Guntiel and her husband were kept under guard there as they were in Morehead City, neither allowed to leave the ship. The pretty 23-year-old stowaway was discovered aboard the Asb journ a day out of New York. When the ship tied up at New York, customs officials put the Gunnels under guard and when the ship left there, they wired Sheriff Hugh Salter of this county to put them under guard here. The order was relayed to Wil mington by the sheriff when the ship left here. " The Guntiels are residents ol Copenhagen. Denmark. While the Asbjourn was in Hamburg. Ger many. Guntiel told the sheriff that his wife came to visit and they went ashore, "got a little high" and went back aboard ship together. She decided to stay. Members of the Morehead City police department, in their off-duty hours, were employed by the sheriff to guard the Guntzels. They were Capt. Buck Newsome. Patrol men Joe Smith and Bruce Edwards. Cost of guarding them, $46 a day. was charged to Guntiel whose hob by is building model ships. Mrs. Guntzel is the mother of two chil dren. She told the ship's officers that she had obtained a visa before leaving Copenhagen to visit her husband at Hamburg. The Asbjourn is bound for Rot terdam, Holland and will eventual ly deliver its stowaway back to Denmark. Grower Munden Heads Carteret Cancer Crusade ? Grover Munden, Morehead City, has been appointed chairman of the 1855 Cancer Crusade in tht county. The appointment was made by the Rev. Leon Couch, cymman der of the Carteret unit. Ameri can Cancer Society, at a meetirTt Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Educational Building, Morehead City. Carl Southerland, Morehead City, was made chairman of mail solici tation for the campaign, which runs through April, and Jerry Schumacher, Morehead City, ten tatively accepted the special gifts chairmanship. Principals at schools throughout the county will be requested to as sist In the distribution of coin collectors. The group discussed plans for handling funds to be collected. They went on record favoring the lending of all receipts to state headquarters, providing the state will pay for, out-patient care as well as hospitalization of cancer patients. Steed, Beaufort, receives good citizenship award from Mayor Clifford Lewis. John S. Steed, of Beaufort, man ager of the Beaufort Colonial Store, was one of 20,000 food store managers in the United States who recently were selected to receive the Good Citizen Award.. The award, a handsome blue and gold certificate from the National Association of Food Chains, was presented to Mr. SteeJ by Beau fort's Mayor, C. T. Lewis, at a meet ing of the Beaufort Rotary Club. Included in the scientifically de signed and confidentially rated questionnaires sent out by the as sociation were such tests of citizen ship as the manager's participation in service cluba, Parent-Teacher Associations, or other community organizations; activities with or ganized charities, work with youth groups, regularity of voting and stimulating others to vote, knowl edge of local, national and world affairs, and participation in pro jects to solve community problems. Mr. Steed has been a Colonial Store manager for 26 years, 16 of which have been spent managing the Beaufort store. A native of Maxtoo, Robeson County, Mr. Steed be(f*B His managership in New Bern in 1929, where he lived for two years and four months. From there he went to Belhaven, and managed a Colonial Store for over five years. He was shifted from Belhaven to Kinston, where he stayed about a year. From Kins ton he went to Maxton to spend six months managing a store before going to Wilmington to spend a year prior to coming to Beaufort. In addition to his managing career, Mr. Steed also operated a farm in Robeson County. Mr. Steed married the former Monnie Carlyle, of Lumberton. They have one son, James. Burgwyn, be cause, "No 12 men on this earth can understand the various charg es, claims and counter claims in this suit (covering a 30-yelr charge account) in the limited time of a session of the Superior Court. "And that includes this presiding judge," he added. , ' County Clubs Increase In Number, Membership Carteret County's 4-H Clubs have experienced remarkable growth during rrfent years. According to record* there were nil** dub* meet ing in 10S2 with 156 L?y| and 221 girls (or a total of 377 member*. In 1908 a club was organised at Markers Island. The total anrolled that year was 637 consisting of 287 boys and 350 girl*. v The entire 4-H Program was in creased in 1954 as qew clubs were organized at several schools. In termediate clubs wpre started at Atlantic, Smyrna, Markers Island and Camp Glenn. The enrollment swelled to 773 members with 348 boys and 425 girls. In September 1954 an inter mediate club was organixed at New port which brought the total num ber of clubs in the county to 15. Now there are 408 boys enrolled and 480 girls. This total of 868 members is the large*t ever at tained in Carteret County. A Community 4-H Club will be organized at Pelletier and the en rollmene may easily go over 900. It is the purpose of the extension agents in the county to gi^ve every boy and girl in school 'from 10 years of age up the opportunity and advantage of being a 4-H club member. After all 4-H'ers "learn by doing." The largest 4-H Club in the county is the Camp Glenn Junior Club with 103 members. There are 74 members in the Harkers Island Junior Club, 93 in the Smyrna Junior Club and 79 in the New port Junior Club. The largest sen ior club is Atlantic. They have 63 members. Stanley Jones, Newport, loct his license after being convicted" in Morehead City Hecorder'a Court on a second offense of drunken driv ing. Ralph L. Smith, Newport, loot his license after being convicted in Thomasville Recorder's Court for speeding over 70 miles per hour. The license of Robert Louis Brown, Morehead City, was taken after be was evicted in South port Recorder s Court for speeding over 75 miles per hour. Beaufort Police Pick Up Stray Dog Yesterday Beaufort police ye&ftrday picked up a brown dog with white mark ings, described as part bull dog. The dog also had a collar but no name on it.
