Mayor C. T. Lewis again took the
oath of office as mayor.
New members of the board are
Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Chaplain and
Mr. Mades.
Dan Walker, town clerk, told
the board that for the first time,
to his knowledge, all 1954-65 bills
had been paid out of 1964-53 re
ceipts and not out of pre-paid taxes
as has been done in the past be
cause of lack of funds.
The total budget, exceeding laat
year's by $13,081.00. includes pro
vision for adjustment of salaries of
several men in the street depart
ment, and provides for hiring a
police woman to check parking
meters and write parking tickets.
Because the police car has close
to SO, 000 miles on it. commission
ers felt a new one should be con
sidered.
The new stop lights will replace
the three already up. Mr. Walker
explained that the recent legisla
ture passed a law requiring the
red light to be on top. Beaufort's
present lights do not operate in
that manner in all directions.
The board will also specify lights
with an amber signal in its bid re
quest.
Mr. Walker said that all town
equipment is paid for except that
under lease - purchase contract.
Owed on a front and back loader
is $2,023 and owed on the parking
meters obtained following the hur
ricane is $2,189.54.
The general fund budget for the
coming year totals $81,399.75. Ear
marked for debt service is $29,450.
Budget totals for the various de
partments are as follows: adminis
trative, $12,755.25; general ex
penses (insurance, gas, oil, etc.)
$10,280; police department, $25.
117; fire department, $9,702.50;
and street department, $23,345.
No Court Estimate
Mr. Walker said he did not in
clude any estimates on the court in
the budget because the court is an
'unknown quantity." "And if the
court does operate," he commented,
"I believe it will be at a deficit."
The board authorized the order
ng of 1956 town tags with the
ame slogan as the 1955 tags, "De
ightfullv Different."
;DefetV<l until "July w?-ia*io^

irney Gene Smith and Clerk Dan
Valker suggested that the lot be
Hid out of the $1,100 received on
'settling of taxes on a life estate,
but Commissioner Gerald Hill said
he could see no need of paying for
the lot "right away."
The attorney was also authorized
to investigate the request that a
deed be furnished by the town for
property on Turner Street. The
deed, according to the clerk and
Commissioner Hill had been lost.
Relayed Request
Commissioner Hill forwarded the
request on behalf of Attorney,
Claud Wheatly who was out of
town.
The -clerk said that two persons
on Front Street had requested that
shields be put on street lights to
prevent the light from shining in
their windows. He added that the
power company will not put shields
on lights unless the town board re
quests it and takes responsibility
for any damage that may occur on
the street as the result of shielding
the light.
All official action Thursday night
was taken by the outgoing board.
Commissioners present were Gor
don Hardeaty, Carl Hatsell, Mr.
Rumley and Mr. Hill.
The new board will have it" first
meeting Monday. July 11.
