Scientists Say
Shellfish Can Be
Grown in Ponds
On the subject of something to
eat here's more about North Caro
lina's seafood industry, as seen
through professorial eyes.
Dr. Melbourne Carriker, a "ma
rine ecologist" (that's an academic
expression for expert on growing
seafood), made a speech recently
on 'The Growth of the Hard
Clam."
Dr. Carriker revealed his ex
perience in New York during the
summers in growing clams. With
other zoologists he has a place on
Gardiners Island, off the tip of
Long Island. On Gardiners Island
is a salt water lake, called Home
Pond. In home pond are thousands
of clams and oysters, shrimp and
other seafood.
The marine ecologists are study
ing their habits^ the habits of the
clams chiefly. Young clams are
fed on pablum. That's how care
fully they are watched and nour
ished. Some of the oysters in Home
Pond are a foot long, and up to
12 years of age. Some of the clams
are every bit of 50 years old.
What results does Dr. Carriker
expect?
He and his colleagues hope to
show how all kinds of seafood can
be grown in shallow ponds, close
ly connected with the sounds and
oceans. The fishes and oysters and
clams can be protected from na
tural enemies, so that they can
thrive and become plentiful.
Then when the time comes that
the land doesn't provide all the
food the human race can eat, we
can turn to the denizens of the
deep and the salt water ponds
developed by Dr. Carriker of the
University of North Carolina and
other professors of matters affect
ing fish.
