C. ii " 4-H Offers Opportunity to Adults To Serve as Leaders in Club Work By MRS. JOHN B. KELLY County Adult 4 II Leader There are many opportunities awaiting the rural adults of Car teret County, which would enrich the lives of both the young and old. It is up to each of us to rec ognize these opportunities and contribute by volunteering to as* ?ist In every way we can, in the training of our young boys and girls, who will be tomorrow's lead ers in our community, county, state and nation. Oar interest in the youth, and our willingness to help them will be an inspiration to our boys and girls to do their best. Our greatest opportunity, and the need is great today, in Car teret County, is to work with our 4-H club boys and girls as adult leaders. Every 4-H Club should have one or more adult leaders in the community to help and en courage them in their work. We, as conscientious parents and adults should awaken to the call and strive to help them uphold their 4-H motto: "To Make the Best Better," with our mutual goal being to make this a better world. Each of us who accepts leader ship in our local clubs counts it a great privilege to be able to serve in "the largest rural youth organization in the world," a worthwhile organization that has . grown from a small club of 12 1 members in 1909 to over two mil lion 4-H club members today. The 4-H Club originated in j North Carolina and our state still leads all the others in enrollment, j If there is any question as to i. what we could do to help this or ganization, may I suggest first of i all, that we study and learn all [ we can about the 4 H program We | may work with a small group of ( boys, or girls, or both, who live within a short distance of our home. Each member will be enrolled in an agricultural project (such as corn, pig, garden, dairy calf) Morris, Velna Morton, Barbara Nichols, Florence Pittman. Mary Phillips, Dorothy Ann Proud, Elsie Raz, Joan B. Salter, Judy Salter, Portia Salter, Sabra Salter, Valeria Salter, Doris San ders. Brenda Smith, Edna Faye Smith, Nettie Taylor, Cecelia Weeks, Kay Willis, Katherine Yoak. or in a lutmcmaking project (such as home improvement, clothing, frozen foods, canning, food prepa ration, and home management). Also, every 4 H Club member is ex pected to carry the health project i in addition to his or her project in agriculture or homemaking. I There are 44 projects from I which a club member may choose. | Information concerning all these I projects is available through our county extension agents. Our job lis to help these boys and girls to ! choose and carry out their pro ject und assist them in difficulties! that may arise between the times' of their regular meetings with i their agents. Organization of a neighborhood ! or community club is a great asset) to any community. We can obtain ! the names from our home or j county agent, of all the boys and girls of 4-H age in our community, | and call a meeting of these chil dren aini their parents to organize ; a club. This would stimulate in ] terest in 4-H work and be lots of j fun and recreation as well. It is a part of every 4 11 Club member's job to keep a record of his or her project. We can assist them in keeping these record books. Impress upon them the need of having it up to date at all times. We should use every means to stimulate their interest in special county events. Encourage each member to exhibit his project work on such occasions as County 4-H Achievement Day and county j and state fairs. Help to provide ; ways of transportation in order j that more may attend these events. There are numerous opportuni ties for adult leadership in help- 1 ing plan and present their annual 4-H Church Sunday programs. The County 4-H Camp, held annually, needs leaders to serve as coun selors. Let's put our shoulder to the wheel, folks, and start the 4-H wagon rolling in Carteret County. We have the boys and girls who have the talent and ambition to work. We also have very efficient farm and home agents to work with them, so let's do our part. Our own lives will be greatly enriched as a result of our ex periences with them. We will learn as we serve, but most of our re- 1 ward will come in the satisfaction j we feel in having had a part in helping boys and girls become bet- 1 ter citizens, and making our com munity a better place. Then we can join them in lay ing: I Pledge: My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty. My Hands to larger service and My Health to better living fer My Club, my Community and <ny Country. You figure out your social se curity tax for self employment on page 3 of Schedule C (Schedule F for farmers), which has instruc tions on the back. You may have to file a social security tax return (including Form 1040) even though you owe no income tax. At the bottom of this page is Schedule SE, for reporting your social security tax. Both husband and wife must fill out separate Schedules SE (even if they are filing jointly) if both are report ing for social security. Occupations excluded from so cial security are those of public officials, physician, lawyer, den tist, osteopath, veterinarian, chiro practor. naturopath, optometrist, and (unless they specifically ask to be covered) ministers of the gospel including Christian Science practitioners.
