"I can hardly wait until next year," says ' Brannon. Surveying the Scene with Hal Shapiro ? A farce, as far as basketball tournaments are concerned, the Sea shore Conference tourney finally came to an end Friday night with the Morehead City Eagles the victors. With all spectators at the contests Wednesday, Thursday and Fri day, the most-asked question was, "What do they have this tourna ment for?" It's a good question and' needs a reply. We've been told that it enables the teams that are left out of coun ty tourneys and district playoffs a last opportunity to play. But what does the tourney prove? The season ended with Newport the conference champions. The Hawks went on to win the Carteret County tourney and then went to Kenansville. Camp Lejeune won the Onslow County title and they too went to Kenansville. Neither of the county titleholdcrs was able to win at the district playoffs and the season should have ended right there. It didn't though, since the Conference Tourney was played last week. The tournament started off on the wrong foot when White Oak, the team closest to Swansboro, arrived a half hour late to start the first game of a four-game schedule for the evening Wednesday night. The final game didn't start until 10:30 and ended just before mid night, and I can assure you that the fans who stayed for all the games were mighty tuckered out on Thursday. None of the games was an especially thrilling contest, and the top seeded aggregation was too much for any of their opponents. The suggestion that has been offered by several of the coaches seems to be the logical thing for the future. These coaches, who requested anonymity, stated that the Seashore Conference tourney should be played during the Christmas vacation period when it will enable fans of the conference to get a line on the teams that they will be seeing during the rest of the season. It will give those schools with football squads an opportunity of getting their squads unlimbered prior to the start of the season, and will enable all others a preview of things to come. We are inclined to agree with these coaches and would Iik<* very much to see a tournament played during the Christmas vacation period when there arc more people in the area and the winning team might be accorded some real recognition. ? Little League practice sessions will start April 15, according ot an announcement by Floyd Chadwick, player agent of the Morehead City program. All of the youngsters who belonged to a team last season, and haven't graduated from the program are to report on that date as are all youngsters interested in trying out for the vacancies that exist on the rosters of the clubs. There will once again be four teams playing in the Little League this summer. Sponsors of the teams are now being contacted. ? A meeting of teams interested in thie Carteret County Baseball League will be held sometime next week, according to BUI (Bull) Durham, president of Che loop. Current plans call for the same teams as last season with the possi ble addition of a squad from Swansboro. Details of the meeting will appear in THE NEW&TIMES. RELAX ?
