Geologist Says State s Ground
Water Reservoirs Are Adequate
Raleigh ? Contrary to popular
belief, the underground reservoirs
in North Carolina are not being
depleted snd the water table is not
perennially falling
This statement is made by H.
E. LeGrand, geologist with the
Raleigh office of the U.S. Geolo
gical Survey, in Bulletin No 69
on "Ground-Water Resources in
North Carolina."
The bulletin, just published, is
a cooperative undertaking of the
Geological Survey and the North
Carolina Department of Conserva
tion and Development and may be
obtained by writing the C&D De
partment's Division of Mineral Re
sources, Raleigh.
No Overdelopment
"In spite of the great number
of wells, the ground water re
sources have not been overdevel
oped," LeGrand writes. "In fact.
North Carolina does not rank high,
compared with other states, in the
total use of ground water."
LeGrand states this is due large
ly to the following reasons: (1)
Surface water supplies are readily
available in many places for large
muncipal and large industrial uses
where individual wells do not yield
large amounts of water; and (2),
more important, most people are
not aware that adequate ground
water supplies may be available
for their purposes.
Using More
Despite the fact. LeGrand says,
that North Carolinians are using
more ground water than ever be
fore, the use is so small and so
dispersed compared with the total
ground water available that the
withdrawal has no significant ef
fect on the water table through
out the State.
The C&D Department and the
Geological Survey are now making
a cooperative study of ground wa
ter resources of the state in an
effort to show where wells can be 1
developed to prodyce various quan
tities of water and to determine
the perennial supply available to
each area.
LeGrand writes that failure to
use ground water is not conser
vation. "As with all renewable
natural resources," he adds, "wise
and full u?e is the most produc
tive form of conservation."

FCDA Orders
Instruments
The Federal Civil Defense Ad
ministration has ordered $3,500,- j
000 worth of radiation detection
instruments, the largest purchase
of its kind in FCDA history.
The money will buy 60,000 sur
vey meters and 105,000 dosimeters
for distribution to the states for
training and FCDA emergency i
storage.
Survey meters, of which the gei
ger counter is one kind, measure i
the rate of radiation per hour. I
The dosimeters, which resemble a j
fountain pen, measure the total
accumulated radiation.
In practice, survey meters would
be used by monitoring personnel
to test areas and materials for
their radioactive contamination.
The dosimeters would be a safety
device to help individuals avoid
excessive radiation exposure.
Some 19,000 civil defense work
ers have been trained as radiolo
gical monitors so far, while 400
have been given advanced train
ing.
More instructors for classes will
be trained in a series of one-week
Radiological Defense Schools now
in operation at FCDA national
headquarters in Battle Creek,
Mich.

Officials Try
To Get Property
I State officials last week tried to
untangle the red tape which is
keeping 569 North Carolinians
from receiving the federal surplus
property promised them as the re
sult of their losses in hurricanes.
Gen. Edward Griffin, state civil
defense director, and David Hol
ton, director of purchase and con
tract. went to Washington Wed
nesday where they conferred with
J. W. Flatley, deputy commission
er of federal supply.
Mr. Flatley promised General
I Griffin and Mr. Holton that some
thing would be done to get the
surplus property to those who ap
plied for it.
Applicants who qualify are to '
get the surplus property at 10 per
cent of cost, plus shipping charges.
Applications were taken in thii
county, as well as throughout the
coastal area, several months ago.
i To date, however, only several
of the requests from this state
have been met.
