Mr. Lewis is em ployed down in Florida. Calvin Rose is a patient in the Sea Level Community hospital, re covering from an operation. Mrs. floral Bell Rose was dis charged Monday from the Sea Level Community hospital after recovering from an operation. Cranston "Dock" Rose has been confined to his bed for the past week. Jeffreys Hurron, Dunn, is do.vn here working with the "East Caio lina Construction Co." Pine Cones Smyrna School Goes All Out for Education Week By MARY ELLEN CHASTEEN "Hello, everybody, hello . Yes, its me and here I am once again to tell you of what has been going on in our school since 1 last vis ited you-all. All you've got to do now is to lend an attentive eye and sit back and take it easy. Our school took a very active part in the activities which were related to American Education Week. Our so ciology class worked very hard and came up with a won derful school ex hibit. 1 1 w a s made up of model school houses of all the schools in o u r school district. It also includ ed paved roads Mary Ellen which lead up to a more modern school building ? our own SHS. The sign which accompanied this ex hibit was: "All Roads Lead to Smyrna." There were also some very interesting posters and ex hibits on the wall, which made our room very attractive and interest ing. Hip, hip, hooray for the Sen iors! Janet Willis, our senior class photographer, took some very good flash-camera pictures of all the 'American Education Week exhibits and posters. These we shall us* in our annual. Whispering Pines, aad we'd like all of you to see them. Orchids to the Future Teachers of America Club! I hope all of you heard their fine radio skit which was presented Nov. 12. It really Showed that we Future Teachers were taking an active part in this national week and that we have some mighty fine actresses and actors in our midst. The cast for the skit, "What Are Little Boys Made Of," waa as fol lows: Mrs. Harper, Dorothy Chad wick; Mr. Harper, Phillip Mason; Phillip Harper, Jimmy Harris; Na tional Heritage, Jackie Guthrie; and Spiritual Heritage, Ann Davis. Also the FTA Club had a sur prise for each teacher each day of the week. On Friday afternoon, Nov. M, the Home Economics II dais and Mrs. Garner honored the teachers with a tea party. While each of the teachers was at Olio party the FTA members were substituting for them. At the end of the day the Future Teachera were honored by a party. Refreshments served were punch or coias, roasted peanuts, popcorn, peanut butter and crackers, and cookies. Everyone of us FTA mem bers enjoyed the day very mnch. In the Library we have a Future Teachers poster which includes the picture and name of each mem ber. On Monday, Nov. 12, the 4-H Clubs met in the auditorium. At the Senior club meeting the pres ident, Mary Ellen Chasteen, called the meeting to order and led the group in the two pledges and in singing the 4-H song. Blanche Wolfe held the devotion and Janet Willis led us in prayer. Paul Wade and Evelyn Baker then presented a short skit on 4-H. The club separated into the two groups and Mr. Knott discussed Beekeep ing with the boys, while Mrs. Gar ner discussed Textile Painting with the girls. On Saturday afternoon at 4:30 Ann Davis represented our school in a short radio program in ob servance of National 4-H Achieve ment Day. Her talk was about the District Elimination Contests which were held in June at Washington. Due to difficulties beyond her con trol, Mary Ellen Chasteen was not able to appear on this program as was scheduled. The PTA held open house on Nov. 12 for all the parents and friends who were present at this month's meeting. We feel that everyone has taken a won derful interest in our schcool and we hope we never disappoint you. Basketball ? that's the favorite topic of discussion these days. It's a mighty good topic, so how about us talking about it? Last Friday night was the last big night for us until next Tuesday night. We played Atlantic in a thrilling home game. SHS came out on top, but it was a tough fight. In the girls' game the score was 21-46. Elberta Gillikin was our highest scorer for the night wth 28 points and Serina Davis was sec ond best with 15. Anna Faye Ar thur made 3 points. For Atlantic, 'Sandra Salter was the sharp?hoot?r with points and Wanda Brown h?d 6. In the boys' game we had two highest scorers. Sharing top scoring hon ors were Louis Thomas and Kenny Davis each with 12 points. For Atlantic, Marshall Saunders was highest with 7 points. Our boys took their game by a score of 48-20.
