The 4-H Club program in Carteret County ia taking a giant step for ward this month The people in the Merrimon-South River area have heen talking and planning (or some time now about a community 4-H Club organization. The boya and girls in this area from the ages of 10 to 14 have not had the oppor tunity to become a 4-H member in the past and this community club will anawer a definite need and de lire on their part. At an organizational meeting in the Merrimon community building Friday night a group of approxi mately 35 young people and 10 par ents and adults from the two com munitiea met to discuss the 4-H program and the possibilitiea and advantages tt would have in their area. Mrs. Garner, our home the Morehead City highway and Mrs. F. S. Becton of Bachelor, twin sisters, celebrated their birth day Sunday. Jan. 27, with their customary family dinner at the Koonce home. A delicious buffet dinner was served from a table arranged with early spring flowers and two identical birthday cakes with the names Lydia (Mrs. Koonce) and Annis (Mrs. Becton). Present were Mr. and Mrs Koonce, Mr. and Mrs. Becton, the Rev. and Mrs. J. G. Crocker of Pine Level, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Haddin and sons, Marion. Jerry, Michael and Jeffrey, Mrs. Or mond L. Thomas and children, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Boyd Jr. and children, Guy 111 and Leah. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cannon and children, Albert Jr., and Ce lia, Mrs. Johnson Hoke, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Johnson Jr. and children, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. James Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. John Mullen and son, Steve, Ad rion Becton, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Fisher, W. Z. H a r 1 o w e and Oak Grove Churches held their last quarterly conference in Oak Grove Church Sunday evening with the district superintendent, the Rev. A. J. Hobbs and Mrs. Hobbs of New Bern. Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Taylor and Mrs. George Carraway were in New Bern Tuesday. Ed and Elmo Taylor visited their sister, Mrs. A. H. Tallman ?t Tuttles Grove Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Styron and Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Johnson and children of Beaufort were guests of Mr. ?nd Mrs. Elmo Taylor Sun day afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. J. Vernon Britton of Raleigh were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. Claude Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Preston Taylor and chilren of Core Creek visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Becton Thursday.. Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Taylor and Mrs. A. H. Tallman of Beaufort RFD were in New Bern Saturday. agent. Linda Becton; vice president. Ed Cannon; secretary. Nancy Pitt man; puhlicity chairman. Marsha Hill, and song leader, Betty Nor man. These boys and girls will begin their official duties at the first reg ular meeting of the club which will be held the third Friday night of the month, Feb. 15. We welcome tkia new club into the program and will be watching for the fin* achievements which I feel sure will result. The 4-H Club meetings for Feb ruary will begin soon and in order that you members might be plan ning to be present in body and spirit. 1 am giving you the follow ing schedule of meetings and com ments about the program: Harkers Island Feb. 8 Smyrna Feb. 11 Newport Feb. 13 Atlantic .... Feb. 14 Merrimon-South River Feb. 15 (night) Camp Glenn ...... Feb. 20 Beaufort ... Feb. 27 Pelletier Feb. 14 (night) The program to be presented by the boys and girls will deal with the purpose of project work, its ad vantages and some pointers to re member. The demonstration for the junior girls will be Making Corn Meal Muffins. The interme diate and senior girls will study forest projects with special consid eration given to making dried leaf mounts for identification purposes This month's program should prove very educational and enter jtaining. I will be seeing you at your club meeting. Marines Mark 16th Anniversary Cannrteteune? More than 11,000 Marines of the Second Division passed in review during a 16th anniversary of the reactivation of the unit Friday morning. Maj. Gen. Reginald H. Ridgeiy Jr., Division Commander, and Maj. Gen. Joseph C. Burger, com manding general of the Marine Corps Base here, inspected and reviewed the parading Leather necks. This date marks the l?h anni versary of the reactivation of the famed Second Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force. The unit has a long and colorful battle record of campaigns in Tarawa, Saipan, Pelilu anil Tuitan. "It is one of America's most ready combat units," according to the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the division command er, i* hirthday messages to divi sion personnel. Architects to Meet Here The Nprth Carolina Chapter of the American Institute a i Archi tects will attend their summer meetteg at Atlantic Beach June 20 22. The architecta met over the weekend at Chapel Hill. ?
